Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department deputies took Larry Earl Yates into custody Monday at Magnolia Middle School on a warrant issued after a grand jury indicted the teacher on the charge of lustful touching of a child.
Sheriff Billy Sollie said Tuesday his office was contacted in regards to the indictment from the August grand jury that was based on charges filed by the Meridian Police Department.
Sollie said a call to the school was made in which Yates was escorted to the central office by a member of the Meridian Public School District Law Enforcement Agency. Deputies then took custody of Yates.
Yates, 58, of 9425 Bluffport Drive, Epps, Ala., is charged in connection with an incident that reportedly occurred on Jan. 6, 2011. The victim is a 16-year-old female student of the school.
The indictment was handed down Aug. 2, according to Lauderdale County Justice Court documents.
Yates was placed on $50,000 bond at the time of his January arrest by detectives of the MPD.
