A former high school choir teacher and ex-music minister has been charged with sexual crimes against boys in the 1980s.
Clinton Police Det. Josh Frazier said John Langworthy was arrested Wednesday at his home. The Clarion-Ledger (http://bit.ly/oj6tHN) said he posted a $200,000 bond on felony gratification of lust charges in Clinton and was taken to Jackson to face similar charges there.
Langworthy was choir teacher at Clinton High School, but didn’t return this fall. He resigned from Morrison Heights Baptist Church in May after telling congregants he had ‘‘sexual indiscretions’’ with boys in Texas over two decades ago. Langworthy said that happened when he was music minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas.
Hinds County, Miss., Assistant District Attorney Jamie McBride said the five alleged victims in Mississippi were members of Jackson churches at the time of the alleged crimes. Langworthy is accused of sexually abusing two of those people at a dorm room at Mississippi College in Clinton, McBride said.
Jeff Rimes, a lawyer who has acted as the Langworthy family’s spokesman, didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment Wednesday.
The maximum penalty on each count is 10 years in jail and a $1,000 fine, which was the penalty set by Mississippi statute at the time the alleged crimes occurred.
