The Mississippi Democratic Party says Russell Jolly of Houston received enough votes to avoid a primary runoff in state Senate District 8.
The seat was previously held by longtime Sen. Jack Gordon of Okolona, who died in May.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/p2T3qn ) reports that the Democrats’ Elections Committee confirms Jolly received 51 percent of the vote in an Aug. 2 primary.
He will face Republican Patsy Gregory of Okolona in the Nov. 8 general election.
The district includes all of Chickasaw County and parts of Calhoun, Grenada and Lee counties.
Marshall Coleman of Calhoun City received 27 percent in the Democratic primary and Sherman Carouthers of Okolona received 22 percent. Coleman challenged the primary results, contending there were voting irregularities.
