Today the teens will present the Broadway classic favorite during a 2 p.m. performance at their new home, the Temple Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Meridian.

More than 60 youth are featured in the production set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City. This oddball romantic comedy — considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy — soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the canon: Sarah Brown, (played by Lallie Elise Bennett), the upright but uptight “mission doll,” out to reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky Masterson (Chad Harman), the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide (Madison Williams), the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she’s been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit (Benjamin Johnson), her devoted fiance, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game.

Also cast in the show are Chase Cooksey as Nicely Nicely, Josh Hertel as Benny, Casey Key as Rusty, Erin Beaudoin as Aunt Arvida, Karam Rahat as Lt. Branigan and Jenna Smiley as General Cartwright, Colton Cooksey as Big Jule and Hayden Manning as Harry the Horse. The “Hot Box” Girls will be played by Lisa Malloy, Rosey Lau, Adreana Bradley, Vashti Graham, Nicole Covington, Kyra Smiley, Kaitlyn Matthews and Katelyn Belcher. Ian Perry, Jesse Seale, Tanner Goldman, Brandon Davidson and Caleb Jones will round out the crapshooters, looking for Nathan to find them a location for the big game.

A group of young wannabe gamblers will be played by Shahmeer Hashmat, Zain Hashmat, James Gibson, Will Byram, Jacob Hertel, Wes Presnall, Shaone Kennedy, Cooper Thaggard and Seth Blanton.

The roles of the “dolls,” dancers, and mission workers feature Kimberly Cook, Sara Creel, Julia Smiley, Mikayla Giles, Sarah Dover, Sarah Kate Pollard, Brooke Davis, Rita Albert, Molly Hertel, Anna Drinkwater, Nicole Seale, Meg Patterson, Anna Blair Pettey, Sarah Page Sikes, Kira Prather, Brooke Knight, Jessica Pankhurst, Kristen Hull, Katie Bruister, Amanda Belcher, Jackie Giles, Jessica Graves, Sarah Kelly, K.K. Johnson, McKenzie Griffin and Lauren Harman.

Handling backstage responsibilities are Caleb Thaggard, assistant stage manager, Shelby Gibson, assistant to the director, and P.J. Crouch, assistant propmaster. Backstage crew members Damian Harman, Shane Blanton, Rachel Varela and Sean Datusch.

Originally established as a Teen Theatre Group through Meridian Little Theatre in 2010, Stage 2 was designed to offer more opportunities for children ages 13-19. The group’s first production, “Les Misérables”-School Edition, featured 58 members participating either onstage or backstage. After “Les Misérables,” the group became independent of its parent organization. Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” was the ensemble’s second production.

In addition to onstage performances, Stage 2 members have participated in theatre workshops, assisted local Boy Scouts in a three-day theatre badge earning camp, performed skits for Care Lodge’s 15th annual Conference on Domestic Violence, assisted with the MLT Ladies Guild’s Breakfast with Santa and participated in the city’s Christmas parade.
