Frederick D. Harbour

    DEKALB – Services for Frederick D. Harbour will be held Wednesday, at 12 noon, at DeKalb Presbyterian Church with Revs. Kevin Meador, Chad Smith and Ben Hailey officiating. Burial will be in Pine Crest Cemetery in DeKalb with Stephens Funeral Home of DeKalb in charge of the arrangements.

    Mr. Harbour, 75, of DeKalb, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at his home. A land and cattle owner, Mr. Harbour was a native of DeKalb. He graduated from DeKalb High School and attended East Mississippi Junior College. Mr. Harbour served the people of DeKalb as mayor for six consecutive terms, retiring in 2001. His hometown and its citizens were his great pride. Prior to his role as mayor, he had worked at Meridian Stockyards for 32 years.

    A life member of DeKalb Presbyterian Church, Mr. Harbour was a church deacon and was serving as elder at the time of his death. He had also served as Sunday school superintendent, leader of the young boys Sunday schools class, and shared leadership with his wife for the Presbyterian Youth Fellowship group.

    Mr. Harbour earned special recognition as a lifetime member in the DeKalb Masonic Lodge and held the distinction of a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was also a lifetime member of Hamasa Temple, and he served as vice president and president of the DeKalb Shriners Club. Mr. Harbour served on the executive boards of the Mississippi Municipal Associations and The Boy Scouts of America. He was a lifetime member of The Navy League of Meridian and served on the Kemper Academy School Board. He served in the 186th Mississippi Air National Guard, which was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis and the James Meredith crisis at the University of Mississippi. Mr. Harbour also was the official driver of the Kemper Academy athletic bus from 1975 to the mid-80s, and was the official clock keeper for all home basketball games at Kemper Academy.

    Mr. Harbour is survived by his wife of 52 years, Peggy C. Harbour; daughter, Lynne Harbour Weaver and fiancé John M. Woolley of Newton; daughter, Christy Harbour Hamilton and husband Anthony A. “Tony” Hamilton of DeKalb; son, F. Dale Harbour Jr. and wife Shannon Brown Harbour of DeKalb; his grandchildren: Taylor Marie Harbour, Baylie Lynne Harbour and Jordan Mae Harbour of DeKalb; sister, Minnie H. Roberts; and, nephews: Troy Roberts, William Roberts and Clay Roberts, all of Houston, Texas.

    He was preceded in death by his mother, Mabel Rosenbaum Harbour; his father, Arnold Harbour; infant brother, Joe Lee Harbour; aunts: Berta Rosenbaum Overstreet and Lucille Rosenbaum Jack; and, uncle, Leonard T. Rosenbaum.

    Pallbearers will be F. Dale Harbour Jr., Jack Harrison, Art Nester, Jim VanDevender, Jimmy Spinks and Robert McLaurin.

    Honorary pallbearers will be James “Rock” McCoy Jr., Shawn Peters, Jake Rush, Norman McKenzie and Carolyn McKenzie.

    The family requests memorials be made to Campus Ministries at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, or to a charity of choice.

    Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at Stephens Funeral Home in DeKalb.
