Autopsy results involving two tragedies that took the lives of three people last week have been released.
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said Monday morning that smoke inhalation was the cause of death for Shawn Davidson, 22, and his 3-year-old son, Andrew Davidson. Both died Feb. 14 in a mobile home fire at 8145 Okatibbee Lake Dam Road.
Allan Dover, coordinator for the Lauderdale County Fire Service, said the flames were confined to the middle section of the mobile home where in a room, the bodies of the adult and child were found. He said when volunteer firefighters from Suqualena, Bailey and Collinsville arrived on the scene, both ends of the structure were filled with thick, black smoke.
Dover said state and local fire investigators searched the next morning through the charred remains of the mobile home. He said no report stating the exact cause of the fire has been received by his office and speculated it may be one or two more weeks before one is released.
Cobler said the autopsy results on the death of Toomsuba volunteer fireman Larry Gressett stated Gressett died as a result of drowning.
Gressett died Feb. 17 as he tried to assist in the rescue of Odell Presswood, 73, after Presswood fell out of a boat while fishing with a friend at a lake near Sam Hurt Road.
Presswood also died during the incident. Cobler said no autopsy was requested for Presswood.
Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said a call to 911 about 5:30 p.m. said a man fell out of a fishing boat in the lake located about two miles south of the Toomsuba exit of Interstate 20.
Several emergency service agencies including members of the Toomsuba Volunteer and Rescue Department responded to the incident. Gressett and another emergency responder were trying to swim out to the boat where the other fisherman was trying to keep Presswood’s head above water. It was during this time Gressett went under.
