MCC Workforce Development is offering a free M3 at the Workforce Development Center starting Thursday, Feb. 24, and ending April 21.
The M3 credential, which stands for Modern Multi-skill Manufacturing, helps increase employability skills and adds value to a person’s resume or application especially for those seeking employment in a manufacturing setting.
“Many hiring industries and businesses are looking for certain skill levels and achievements in specific areas. With the M3, there is documented proof that you have completed a level of training in the areas that business and industry value,” said Janet Heggie, Dean of Community and Business Development.
There are three levels to the M3 credential. Level one, verifies students have achieved an understanding of basic manufacturing skills. Items that are covered in this first level of the M3 are: Basic Safety, Basic Computer Skills, Introduction to Hand and Power Tools, Blueprint Reading, Basic Measurement, Precision Measurement Tools, Introduction to SPC and Control Chart Operation. The class, which will be held on Thursdays, 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. during the 8-week period, focuses on level one. Participants must have a CRC (Career Readiness Certificate), which they can obtain by calling the MCC Career Center at (601) 481-1370.
The M3 was developed through The Montgomery Institute and the WAEM (West Alabama East Mississippi) alliance to assist not only individuals seeking employment but also for the employer themselves. It helps an employer weed through applicants and save valuable training time since the potential employee has already achieved a certain documented skill level.
“Our economy is finally showing positive signs of growth,” said Heggie. “With nearly 70 percent of available jobs — nationwide — in the area of skilled positions and trade, the need to increase your value on a job application is essential.”
According to recent surveys, most Americans believe that manufacturing is the most important industry for a strong national economy. The U.S. is still the world’s largest manufacturer. For present and future economic well being, the U.S. must maintain and expand its strong manufacturing base. This can only be done by a strong, skilled and readily available workforce.
“A strong workforce is so important to our local, regional and national economy. Meridian Community College works with local business and industry to assess their needs and develop curriculum, credentials and certifications based on their needs and wants,” Heggie said. “We are committed to creating a local, highly-skilled and readily available workforce for area industry and business to benefit the employee, employer and the economy.”
