Fire claims life of man, child

A trailer fire left an adult male and a child dead outside of Collinsville Monday night.
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said that the two bodies were found inside a trailer at 8145 Okatibbee Dam Road. He said that “more than likely” the victims died of smoke inhalation as a result of the fire.
Their bodies will be sent to Jackson this morning, Cobler said, where autopsies will hopefully confirm the identities and ages of the two individuals.
Firefighters reported to the scene around 7 p.m. Monday, said Allan Dover, Lauderdale County Volunteer Fire Services Coordinator. Firefighters from Suqualena Volunteer Fire Department, Daleville Fire Department and Collinsville Fire Department, among others, responded.
“The first arriving units were on the scene within just two or three minutes,” Dover said. “We arrived on the scene (and) the fire was fully involved.”
“We were able to suppress the fire back far enough where we could get a primary search in. Nobody was found at that point in time.”
Dover said that once the flames were tamed and some of the smoke cleared, firefighters “were able to discern a body.”
While the adult body was found near where the fire began, Dover wouldn’t say where in the trailer either of the bodies were found.
“It was (at) the origin of the fire where the two victims were found,” Dover said, adding the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
