Funeral services for Alvin Edward McCollum age 85 of Bailey will be held Monday Feb. 7, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Barham Funeral Home with Corps officer pastor Major Don Wildish officiating.
Mr. McCollum passed away Thursday February 4, 2011 at Infinity Hospice. He was born and reared in Mississippi from humble beginnings, a self made man. He was a devoted husband to the love of his life Shirley, for 63 years. He was a doting father to his children Norris and Dorris the pride and joy of his life. He proudly served his country in the US Marines during World War II. He was owner of
Meridian Storm Windows and Siding Company for 25 years and served the East Mississippi Home Remodeling industry for 60 years. He was actively involved with the local Salvation Army church for 60 years in various leadership roles, he served as the Corps Sergeant (Deacon), Men’s Ministry President and was chosen Man of the Year in the Tri State Division. He was recognized for Volunteerism in Community Care, Nursing Home Ministry and the Christmas Kettle and Angel Tree Program. He was admired and respected by untold men and women and he helped to mold and shape the lives of many young people who affectionately called him “Grandpa”. His hobby was fishing, but his ministry was the fisher of men. A valiant soldier of Jesus Christ, who fought the good fight and finished the course.
His family and friends salute him and say, “well done thy good and faithful servant”. Survivors include his wife Shirley McCollum of Meridian, son Norris McCollum and daughter Lt. Colonel Dorris Gonzalez and husband Lt. Colonel Henry Gonzalez all of Texas. Grandchildren Capt. Christina Branscum and husband
Capt. John Branscum of Lufkin, TX, Melissa Gonzalez Jacksonville, FL, Brad Gonzalez and wife Michelle of Kyle, TX. Sisters Annie Ruth Edwards and husband Bobby of Florida, Marquita Quimby and husband Robert of Vicksburg, MS, Sister in law Eula Boyette of Bailey and many nieces and nephews. Great grandchildren Wesley Branscum, Montana Branscum, Hannah Branscum, Sophia Gonzalez and
Olivia Gonzalez. Pallbearers are Brad Gonzalez, Wesley Branscum, Montana Branscum, JoVonn Hill Murvis McCollum and David Ruth.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Barham Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Meridian Memorial Park.
