Katherine Horne of Meridian has written a book that is a collection of folklore and historic stories called “Out of Mississippi Mists.”

Many of the tales are stories Horne said she has heard “handed down through many years.”

Not all of the stories in the collection are spooky, but some are just right for the book’s availability this week heading into Halloween.

“One of the stories is about a ghostly couple that haunts Weidmann’s,” Horne said.

Another story centers around the burning of Meridian by General Sherman during the Civil War, and plans to smuggle gold out of the city to Richmond, Va.

Most of Horne’s stories are set in East Mississippi.

Horne is scheduled for book signings for “Out of Mississippi Mists” on Thursday, Oct. 28 beginning at noon at Weidmann’s Restaurant, 210 22nd Ave., and Friday, Oct. 29 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at The Daily Grind, 4820 Poplar Springs Drive.

For more information or to get copies of the book contact Horne at (601) 483-7496 or email kateedc@aol.com.

Although “Out of Mississippi Mists” is Horne’s first book, she has had many articles published in newspapers and magazines. She also writes poetry. Here is one of her poems about Halloween.

EN ROUTE TO A PERFORMANCE OF A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

by Katherine Ann Horne

The orange light

of a black goblin taxi

unengaged

wet-streaked in London pavement

 is a synthesis

of all my flame-grinning jack o’lanterns

and flying friendly witches

laughing in the nighted cosmos

of mist-diffused street lights on corners

like looming pumpkin moons

inviolate

to mankind’s giant leaps

 there is no countdown

for

the launching of broomsticks

from RAIN ON A TIN ROOF
