- Southeast Lauderdale's Denisha Knight makes a leaping catch near the fence against Clarkdale on Tuesday night.
Clarkdale continued flexing its road muscle as it ripped Division 5-3A foe Southeast Lauderdale 16-1 Tuesday night in Vimville. The Bulldogs have won 16 of 17 on the road in 2010.
“I’m pleased with the win, especially in a district game,” said Clarkdale coach Rick Roberson. “That’s our 17th game in a row on the road so we’re proud of that 16-1 record. That’s not easy to do.”
Lauren Thrash jump-started the Bulldog offense, launching a shot deep over the wall in left field that drove in leadoff hitter Sarah Harris, who had singled to open the game in the top of the first inning.
After the Tigers went three up, three down in the bottom of the first the CHS bats really came to life scoring nine runs on eight hits in the second. Shana Elmore crushed a solo shot to lead off the inning before the Bulldogs loaded the bases. Winning pitcher Molly McLeod helped her cause driving in a run and then Harris, Amber Spann, Thrash and Abby Roberts all followed with RBI hits. Elmore would cap the scoring in her second at bat of the inning singling to center to make the score 11-0.
Both teams went down quietly throughout the next two innings of play. Clarkdale then finished its offensive onslaught in the fifth when Logan Bozeman roped a line shot to the gap in left-center for a three-run, inside-the-park home run. Spann and Thrash each drove in runs in the inning.
Southeast finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning when shortstop Miranda Chatham walked with the bases loaded to bring home a run.
The Tigers were overmatched in the contest, according to SEL coach Mac Fanning.
“It was David versus Goliath out there tonight, but this time Goliath won,” said Fanning.
Clarkdale got a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate from Harris, while Thrash accounted for three hits and five RBIs. Elmore and Bozeman each had two hits in the contest.
The Tigers got a team-high two hits from Kimberly Duncan. Tynecia Newell and Marissa Boutwell each had a single.
“We come out of here tonight in charge of the district,” added Roberson. “We are 4-0 now and we get to go home for a couple of weeks.”
The Bulldogs will host Choctaw Central in a division game Thursday night, while Southeast is also in division play traveling to Philadelphia.
