Area Roundup: No. 1-ranked Clarkdale goes down

    The No. 1-ranked softball team in the state suffered its first loss of the 2010 season Thursday night as Clarkdale fell to powerhouse New Hope 14-8 on the road.

    Lindsey Beard led the Bulldogs with three hits, while Abby Roberts, Shana Elmore, Sarah Harris and Alex Smith all had two hits apiece. Amber Spann added a home run in the contest.

    Clarkdale had 16 hits on the night committing two errors, while New Hope had 17 hits and only one error. Molly MCleod suffered the loss on the mound.

    The Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday in the Clinton Tournament where they will take on Northwest Rankin and Madison Central.

    Northeast Lauderdale got two hits, including a double, from Elizabeth Barnacastle and Karley Swearingen got the win on the mound as the Trojans downed Southeast Jones by five runs Thursday night at Northeast Park.

    Charlie Boswell had two hits, while Thara Hall and Kirsten Myers each had a double on the night.

    The Trojans improved to 3-5 on the season taking down rival Southeast Lauderdale by four runs Thursday night at Northeast Park.

    Elizabeth Barnacastle and Charlie Boswell both had two hits, while Thara Hall added a triple.

    Karley Swearingen got the win on the mound for the Trojans who host Northeast Jones on Tuesday night.

Quitman        18

    Quitman continued its winning ways Thursday night as it blasted Northeast Jones to improve to 8-1 on the season.

    Ashley Downing led the Panthers with three hits including a grand slam, while Brianna McRee also had three hits. Relanda McFarland, Tori Dew, Abigail Toomey and Megan McIlwain all had two hits apiece in the contest. Mallory Lee added a triple.

    QHS will host Meridian High and West Lauderdale on Saturday.

West Lauderdale    10

Louisville        0

    West Lauderdale played its best game of the season Thursday night according to coach Cary Luke and run-ruled Louisville to improve to 11-2 on the year.

    Paige Davis led the Knights with three hits and a grand slam, while Ashley Adams also added three hits on the night. Alanna Tedder, Tabitha Deavers and Mallory Turner each had two hits apiece, while Tori Taylor, CC Lawn and Emily Pogue each had one RBI in the contest.

    West will travel to take on both Quitman and Enterprise on Saturday.

Enterprise        17

Bay Springs        2

    The Enterprise softball team got back on track Thursday night after two-straight losses blasting Bay Springs by 15 runs to win via run rule.

    Randa Mathis was 4-4 from the plate and Morgan Porter, Harley Smith and Blair Hennington each had three hits apiece. Bethany Volking added a sinle and a home run.

    EHS (8-2) host Stringer and then West Lauderdale Saturday.
