A school bus full of students from Enterprise High School and a car collided Thursday afternoon at about 3:30 in Enterprise.

    According to Enterprise Police Chief Randy Boykin, none of the school children were injured. The bus driver also was not hurt but Boykin said the driver of the car did suffer serious injuries.

    “The driver of the Pontiac Grand Am had to be airlifted out to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson,” said Boykin.

    Boykin did not know the exact injuries suffered by the victim who he said was a 55 to 60 year old man.

    According to Enterprise Superintendent Arthur McMillan, the bus was transporting 25-30 students from the elementary school and headed to the high school to pick up students headed for home.

    “None of the children were visibly hurt,” McMillan said. “We took the students to the high school and released them to their parents or designated guardian. A couple of parents took their children to the hospital to make sure they are okay.”

    Boykin said the accident occurred where St. John Street meets Highway 513 just west of Highway 514. He said the car pulled out in front of the school bus and the bus impacted on the driver’s door. He said the momentum of the bus caused it to impact the front porch of a home that sits close to the scene.

    Boykin said in regards to none of the children or bus driver being injured, “Those buses are designed to take a serious impact. And this was one of them.”

    McMillan commended the bus driver, law enforcement and school officials for their quick actions.

    “The bus driver did a wonderful job getting the children off the bus and over to an area that was safe and accounted for all of them,” he said.

    “The police were there right away, and the teachers were there to see about their children and called the parents to let them know what was going on.”
