The eatery, which closed suddenly in April, re-opened with a new menu and new decor Monday. The restaurant will be open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this week, and will open for dinner next week.

Weidmann’s was founded in 1870, and was operated by the same family all the way through the 1990’s. It was sold in the early 2000’s, and underwent massive renovations at that time because of deterioration in the building.

Weidmann’s re-opened for the first time under Chef Willie McGehee, who left the restaurant in April.

After McGehee’s departure, the restaurant was turned over to Charles Frazier, formerly the general manager of Crescent City Grill in Meridian, and Frazier has incorporated aspects of the original restaurant into the remodeled one.

Along with bringing back some of the old light fixtures and other items from the original Weidmann’s, Frazier has revived popular menu items from the original restaurant, including black bottom pie and trout almondine, and has devised a way to bring back the tradition of peanut butter crocks at the tables without violating health regulations.

Frazier and his executive chef, JohnTourtellotte, have also filled the menu with many recipes of their own. Some of the menu, such as the blackened catfish salad and the classic muffuletta, is creole or cajun inspired, while other items, like the fried green tomato appetizer, are inspired by standard southern fare.

Monday’s menu ranged in price from $3.95 for a vegetable plate to $18.95 for a 12 ounce ribeye. It featured beef, seafood, chicken, and pork entrees, six types of sandwiches, a number of appetizers under $8, a vegetable plate with choices between 14 veggies, and six different entree salads.
