Post office robbed in Newton

    Officials late Monday afternoon confirmed that two people entered the Newton Post Office brandishing a handgun and robbed the clerk of an undetermined amount of cash.

    Newton Mayor David Carr said no one was injured in the incident.

    Investigators with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are in charge of the probe. The Postal Inspection Service is the law enforcement arm of post offices across the nation. Officials in Newton said federal investigators are keeping details of the alleged incident under wraps. The postal service investigators have not released any official statement in relation to the incident.

    Sources close to the investigation said at about 3 p.m. a white male and white female, both in their mid-40s, entered the post office armed with a handgun. After getting a sum of cash, the pair is said to have fled in a white Buick sedan. There was no direction of travel given.
