He tells The Mississippi Press the funeral at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Lucedale is being organized by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the state Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. Welford was a 30-year conservation officer before his election as sheriff.

He was hit Wednesday by a pickup truck he was trying to stop to end a police chase. The passenger, 24-year-old Christopher Lee Baxter, was wanted for failing to show up for sentencing on a drug charge.

Baxter and 18-year-old driver Brandy Nicole Williams are in an undisclosed jail. Each is charged with capital murder.
