State Games Roundup: Meridian, Philly lifters earn State Games golds

Powerlifters from Meridian and Philadelphia brought home gold medals from the State Games of Mississippi Powerlifting competition Saturday. The competition was held at Jeff Anderson Memorial Hospital Fitness Center. Athletes from 12-77 years old competed in the event.
Gold medalists included Dori Pedin of Philadelphia, winning in the Female Open Division with a combined lift of 730 pounds; Dylan Peden of Philadelphia lifting 935 pounds; Meridian’s Ken Morgan, lifting 1365 pounds in the Open Division, and Cole Morgan, lifting 580 pounds in the T1 Division; and Alvin Hinton, Jr., of Laurel, lifting 1135 pounds in the Open Division. Richard Long of Meridian earned a silver medal in the Open Division with a combined lift of 1280 pounds
In the T3 Division, 148-pound weight class, the gold medalist was Willie Isabell with a combined lift of 810. Teammate Nick Bird took the gold in the 145-pound weight class, lifting 675 pounds.
The youngest lifter in the competition, 12-year-old Molly Sorto of Pontotoc earned the gold medal in the Female T1 Division, lifting 265 pounds. Starkville’s Jack Dundinger of Starkville earned two gold medals in Bench and Deadlift in the M4 Division. Dundinger, 77, was the oldest competitor.
Baskin leads MSA swimmers
The Meridian Swimming Association competed in their first long-course meet of the season Saturday at the State Games Youth Swimming in Tupelo. The meet concludes today.
During Day 1 of the meet, though, Dalton Baskin led the MSA contingent, winning one gold and a pair of silvers. Baskin, competing in 10-and-under boys, won the 50-meter freestyle in 36.04. He finished second in the 50-meter backstroke (46.65) and 100-meter free (1:30.11). Baskin also finished third in the 50-meter breaststroke in 56.17.
Others placing for MSA were Hunter Baskin (13-14 boys), who finished sixth in the 200 backstroke (3:21.82), eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:52.82), 10th in the 50 freestyle (33.31) and 11th in the 200-meter individual medley (3:19.60); and Rhet Haley (11-12 boys), who was sixth in the 50 breaststoke (51.68), eighth in the 50 freestyle (35.03), 10th in the 50 backstroke (46.37) and 10th in the 100 freestyle (1:22.25).
Alexander wins female 5K run
Meridian’s Vicki Alexander was the top female finisher in Saturday’s 5K run at Bonita Lakes during the State Games of Mississippi. Alexander finished in 23:09.90 to earn the gold medal. The overall winner was Nick Mumme, of Holcomb, finishing in 18:14.50.
Also medaling were Meridian’s Paul Crouch, who won the wheelchair overall division in 46:05.5; Philadelphia’s Coby McMillan (9-and-under) in 38:31.60; Meridian’s Manuel Granados (15-19) in 18:54.00; Meridian’s Parker Temple (20-24) in 25:06.90; Meridian’s Stephen Kay (25-29) in 21.35.60; Meridian’s Matthew Swain (30-24) in 21:01.30; Meridian’s Scott Dement (35-39) in 22:21.80; Meridian’s Lawrence Weldon (40-44) in 20:47.00; Meridian’s Bill Hammach (60-64) in 30:47.00 and Marion’s Richard McInnis (65-69) in 27:58.00.
Female medalists included Enterprise’s Shea Stearns (25-29) in 25:44.30; Meridian’s Laurie Shirley (35-39) in 26:43.00; Meridian’s Mary Anderson (45-49) in 27:56.80; Meridian’s Jeanna Mars (50-54) in 30:33.90; Meridian’s Syble Smith (60-64) in 32:56.80 and Meridian’s Judy Crowson (65-69) in 41:38.80.
Seabergh captures 5K overall
Bill Seabergh of Vicksburg was the overall winner in Saturday’s State Games of Mississippi 5K walk at Bonita Lakes. Seabergh finished the race in 37:29.50 to outdistance the field. Capturing the female overall gold was Waveland’s Stephanie Anderson, who ended in 37:29.50.
Other medalists included Scooba’s Samantha Harpole (25-29) in 45:06.20; Meridian’s Cheryl Staton (50-54) in 38:13.10; Meridian’s Gail Barton (55-59) in 49:31.40 and Meridian’s Anne Dowdle (65-69) in 41:41.60.
Lauderdale’s Diller wins cross country gold
Runners from all over Mississippi showed their speed in the State Games of Mississippi Cross Country event held June 5 at Okatibee Lake.
The Overall Men’s gold medalist was Glenn Diller of Lauderdale with a time of 18:52.69. Tim Irvine of Meridian took the bronze with a time of 19:49.49.
In the Women’s Division, Crystal Springs’ Christie Barber earned the gold medal with a time of 23:35.42. Bronze medalist Abigail Shelly of Collinsville coming in at 25:36.96.
Boys Divisional gold medalists included Manuel Granados of Meridian in the Boys 17-19 Division with a time of 20:02.25. Silver medalists were Dylan White of Meridian, 13U, Zach Shelly of Collinsville, 14-16. A bronze medal went to Eli Allen of Collinsville.
In the Men’s Divisions, Stephen Kay of Meridian took the 20-29 age group, coming in at 22:42.15. The 30-39 gold medalist was Michael Hayes of Collinsville at 25:53.00, joined by fellow Collinsville resident Paul Shelly in the Men’s 40-49 age group with a time of 25:37.79. The 50-59 Division was taken by Jim Quick of Meridian, with a time of 24:53.14, and the 60-19 gold medal went to Steve Murray of Philadelphia, coming in at 28:57.67. Silver medalists included Jason Murray of Philadelphia in the 20-29 age group, Mahlon Smith of Hickory in the 40-49 age division, and Curtis Fancher of Union in the 50-59 age group. Aaron Wright of Forest took the bronze in the 20-29 group.
Katya Landis of Meridian took the gold medal in the Girls 13U Division with a time of 29:33.78. The women’s 20-29 division medalists were Megan Latta of Meridian, gold (28:37.98), Evelyn Watkins of Meridian, silver (33:42.24), and Vanessa Brandt Moos of Lauderdale, bronze (37:57.07). Pauline Du Plessis of Meridian took the gold in the 50-59 division with a time of 28:54.41.
East Central teams dominate Youth Baseball
Teams from East Central Mississippi dominated in the 2010 State Games of Mississippi Youth Baseball tournament held on June 5-6 in Philadelphia.
In the 8U Division, the Central Mississippi Badgers from Carthage took the gold medal, and the Philadelphia Titans earned the silver. The Badgers defeated the Titans in the gold medal game 13-2.
In the 10U Division, Philadelphia’s Neshoba Braves took the gold, the Meridian Muddawgs earned the silver, and the Choctaw baseball team claimed the bronze medal. The Diamond Dawgs of Meridian placed fourth. The Muddawgs defeated the Neshoba Braves 15-3 in the final game. They had earlier defeated the Choctaw team 19-11 and 11-10 after dropping their first game to Neshoba 10-6.
Meridian’s Golden Spikes took the bronze medal and the Mississippi Slam from Meridian placed fourth in the 11U Division. The Outlaws of Brandon claimed the gold, defeating the Drillers of Madison 9-1 in the final. The Drillers took home the silver.
Newton’s Lobo’s earned the gold medal in the 12U Division. Meridian’s Rage took the silver. The Lobo’s defeated the Rage 13-2 in the final game.
