Roundup – Calvary ends season in second round of playoffs

    The Calvary Christian baseball team’s season came to an end Thursday night on the road as it fell to Porter’s Chapel 8-6.

    The Cougars led 5-1through five innings. However, Calvary committed costly errors late in the game and Porter’s Chapel took advantage to advance to the next round.

    Matt Seward took the loss pitching a complete game, while giving up seven hits and two earned runs. Seward ends the year with a record of 7-2.

    Jonathan Bartlett paced the Cougar offense with a double, home run and two RBIs. Seward and Trey Chapman each had two hits on the night.

    Calvary finishes the year with a mark of 18-6.

PREP BASEBALL

Sumrall                   12

SE Lauderdale               3

    The Southeast Lauderdale baseball team dropped its opening game in the best-of-three series on the road Thursday night by nine runs to Sumrall.

    Blake McMullen was the losing pitcher for the Tigers, while leading them at the plate with two hits.

    Southeast (16-12) will host Sumrall in game two tomorrow night at 5 p.m.

Union game time moved up

    The Union baseball team’s game against North Forrest has been moved up to 4 p.m. today on the Yellowjackets campus.

PREP SOFTBALL

West Lauderdale          11

Bay High                7

    West Lauderdale used a five-run seventh inning to down Bay High on the road to take Game 1 of the best-of-three series Thursday night.

    Misty Richard earned the win on the mound for West.

    Mallory Turner paced the Knight offense going 4-5 with three RBIs, while C.C. Lawn was 2-5 with three RBIs. Haley Moffett had three hits and two RBIs and Tori Taylor had two RBIs on two hits. Richard and Emily Pogue each added two hits in the contest.

    West will host Bay today at 4 p.m. in Game 2. If necessary Game 3 will ensue immediately following Game 2.

Hernando        6

Neshoba Central    5

    Hernando scored five runs in the first inning Thursday and the Tigers held off the Rockets to win the MHSAA Class 5A series opener.

    Hernando added one run in the third, while Neshoba plated one run in the third, fifth and seventh innings and scored twice in the fourth.

    A.J. Peeler led Neshoba (17-8) with three hits, including two triples. Taylor Tucker took the loss for the Rockets, while Olivia Ladmeir earned the win for the Tigers.

    Neshoba hosts Hernando on Saturday for the second and if-necessary games.

Enterprise- Lincoln     7

    Enterprise used a potent offense to take the Game 1 in the Class 2A playoffs Thursday night downing Enterprise-Lincoln by four runs.

    Hayleigh Harper pitched a complete game striking out six, while going for three hits and two RBIs.

    Stacia Whitaker had a double and single along with two RBIs, while Randa Mathis had two RBIs on two hits for the Bulldogs.

    Enterprise will host Enterprise-Lincoln today at 6 p.m. If necessary Game 3 will follow immidiately.

PREP TENNIS

Newton County        7

Columbia         0

    Newton County cruised through the first round of the Class 4A playoffs sweeping Columbia to advance.

    Brandon St. Clair earned the win at No. 1 boys’ singles for the Cougars in a tight three-set match that had to be determined in a super breaker.

    Shannon St. Clair easily clinched the win for NCHS in the No. 1 girls’ singles over Ashley McEntyre 6-2, 6-0, while the No.1 boys doubles’ team of Bryden Reed and Patrick Ross need just two sets to down Tharen Woodson and DePaul Foxworth.

    The No.1 girls’ duo of Cassie Munn and Claire Tadlock defeated Sara Randall and Madison Phillips without surrendering a game, while Blake Cochran and Kelsey Tadlock took care of business in the mixed doubles spot.

    The No. 2 boys’ doubles teams of David Brand and Russ Thompson cruised to the win and the No. 2 girls’ doubles combo of Emily Lucy and Lauren Lurk won 6-0, 6-0.

    Newton County will travel to Bay St. Louis this weekend to in second-round playoff action.

Entrekin records hole-in-one

    Paul Entrekin aced No. 8 at Northwood Country Club, using a 4-hybrid to cover the 185 yards. Playing with Entrekin when he recorded the ace were Shot Sikes, Robert War and Milbourn VanVeckhoven.

EMCC announces

eight-man recruiting class

 

    SCOOBA — Men’s basketball coach Mark White, of the reigning NJCAA Region 23 champion East Mississippi Lions, has announced the signing of seven in-state high school standouts and an international performer to national letters-of-intent during the spring signing period.

    The Lions have added backcourt performers Raymond Walters (16.5 points per game)  and Rickey McCollum (20.8 points and 5.5 assists per game); 6-foot-7 forward Marcus Heidelberg of Quitman High School, who averaged 9.3 points and 6.5 rebounds.

     Also expected to give the Lions some added height along the front line next season are incoming forwards Millaun Brown (9.7 points, 7.9 boards and 1.9 blocks per game) and Darris Ollie (10.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game).

    Additionally in the backcourt, EMCC signed Tradarrius McPhearson (19.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game) Dione Milsap (14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game).

     Making his way to the Scooba campus all the way from the Republic of Senegal in western Africa, point guard Louis Adams is being counted on to make immediate contributions to the EMCC basketball program. The 6-foot-1 playmaker owns plenty of international experience, having averaged 11.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game while playing for Senegal’s U18 National Team at the 2008 FIBA Africa U18 Championship held in Alexandria, Egypt.

ECCC Golfer Qualifies for NJCAA Tourney

 

    RAYMOND — Luke Brown, a freshman member of the East Central Community College golf team, has qualified for the NJCAA Golf Championship scheduled May 16-21, 2010, at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Phoenix.

     Brown advances to the prestigious tournament following his successful participation in the NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship held April 25-26 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club at Hinds Community College in Raymond.

     Brown finished tied for fifth in the 36-hole event by carding rounds of 74 and 77 for a two-day total of 151, 7-over-par, and was named to the All-Region 23 squad along with five other golfers representing the state’s community and junior colleges.

    Trent Travis also competed at the regional tournament for the Warriors. The sophomore, a former Leake Academy standout, tied for 11th in the Region 23 Tournament with rounds of 76 and 78 for a 154 total.

EMCC’s Jackson ties for 13th at NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship

 

    RAYMOND – Freshman Jackson Bryant officially closed out East Mississippi’s 2010 spring golf season by finishing in a tie for 13th place at this week’s NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship played at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.

     Bryant  jumped nine places with Monday’s 3-over-par 75 to tie Northeast Mississippi’s Daniel Singh for 13th place in the two-day event.  Competing individually for head coach Dale Peay’s EMCC Lions, Bryant stood in a three-way tie for 22nd place following Sunday’s opening-round 80.

EMCC Lions close out 2010 baseball campaign with pair of home splits

 

    SCOOBA — The East Mississippi baseball team closed out its 2010 campaign by earning home doubleheader splits with division rival Northwest Mississippi and Bishop State this week at Gerald Poole Field..

    In their season finale on Wednesday, the home-standing Lions bounced back from a 7-4 setback in the first game to claim a 12-2 victory in the nightcap against visiting Bishop State from Mobile, Ala.

    During Tuesday’s division closer against Northwest, EMCC dropped a 6-4 decision in eight innings in the opener but came back to post a 2-1 win against the Rangers in the second game.
