COLLINS (AP) — A spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks says agents have seized several turtles and an opossum from a roadside zoo in Collins.
Agency spokesman Jim Walker said 22 citations were issued at the zoo. He said 19 of those were for possession of inherently dangerous animals without a permit.
Walker wouldn’t confirm Wednesday that agents were acting on a complaint earlier filed by the Humane Society of the United States that alleged welfare and safety violations.
Walker said his agency would give the zoo owners time to come into compliance, but the citations would be turned over to Justice Court in Covington County.
Gus and Betty White opened the Collins Zoo in 1988. No one immediately returned a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.
