Roundup – Calvary squeaks past Rebul Academy

Limited to just five hits, Calvary Christian still kept its perfect record intact as they edged visiting Rebul Academy 6-5 on Tuesday at Q.V. Sykes.
The Cougars used a squeeze play to take a 5-4 lead in the fourth and after Rebul tied it in the fifth, Calvary scored the winning run on a balk following a fake steal in the sixth.
Kyle Koch earned the win, improving to 3-0, pitching the final three innings. The senior struck out five and allowed just one hit. Calvary allowed just three hits total.
Koch also led Calvary’s offense with three hits, including a triple, and an RBI. Trey Chapman also had an RBI.
The Cougars (9-0, 4-0 in division) visit Rebul on Thursday.

Lamar 5
Leake Academy 3
Behind two home runs from Harrison Thomas, the Raiders rallied for a division win on the road Tuesday.
Trailing 2-0 after the first inning, Thomas knotted the game with a two-run shot in the third and then put Lamar up with a three-run blast in the top of the seventh, plating Beau Burns and Witt Haggard.
Leake would answer with one run in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t complete the rally.
In addition to Thomas’ two home runs and five RBIs, Burns had three hits for Lamar in support of John Countiss, who improved to 2-1, after striking out six and scattering six hits.
The Raiders (7-4, 1-1) host the Rebels on Thursday.

Mt. Salus Christian 3-4
The Warriors ripped Mt. Salus on Tuesday, giving wins to Andrew Culpepper in the opener and John Mark Harris in the second game.
In support of Culpepper, Dylan Nolan doubled and Harris doubled and tripled. Also getting two hits in the first game were Jamey Boland, Colt Taylor, Zac Harper, Dylan Cooper and Dylan Pew.
In the nightcap, Harris tripled and Nolan, Boland and Cooper each had two hits, with Cooper doubling.
The Warriors, who improved to 8-3 and 2-1 in division, visit Wayne Academy on Friday.

Laurel 4
West Lauderdale improved to 3-0 in Region 5-4A play Tuesday night defeating Laurel on the road.
Trey McPherson got the win for the Knights going four innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Senior Wes Stokes earned the save, while striking out five batters in relief.
McPherson led of the game with a home run and Stokes went 3-3 from the plate with two singles and a home run.
West (8-5) is back in action Friday when it hosts Laurel.

SE Lauderdale 20
Heidelberg 4
Southeast improved to 4-5 and 1-0 in division play Tuesday night with a 16-run blowout of the visiting Oilers.
Kyla Sheppard got the win for the Tigers.
Brittany Pounders paced the SEL offense with a triple, single and five RBIs. Kim Duncan tripled and Katie Dawson had two singles in the win.
The Tigers host West Lauderdale on Friday night.

Brittany Baty shut down visiting Northeast Jones on Tuesday and even aided her own cause with a pair of hits.
Baty, who allowed three hits, struck out five in the shutout. She improved to 3-4 on the year.
Meanwhile, NEL’s offense caught fire late, scoring two in the fifth and five in the sixth, when the Trojans racked up five hits. Allison Heflin had a two-run single for NEL.
The Trojans (5-6, 1-1 in division) travel to Northeast Jones on Thursday.

Heritage Academy 2
Central Academy remained perfect on the season as it downed visiting Heritage by 11 runs.
Central (3-0) got a home run, double and single from Corey Dawkins, while Alex Dawkins fell a home run short of the cycle. Layne Reed and Marion Colvin each contributed two hits.
Central will play Newton Academy on Thursday.

The Trojans won the girls singles match Tuesday, but the Knights controlled doubles play and boys singles.
Northeast’s Meredith Barber downed Ashley Rahly 6-3, 6-0 for the Trojans’ lone win. In boys singles, West’s Chris Mallette beat Ryan Brown 6-4, 6-1.
In boys doubles, David Moulds and Jacob Poole beat Matt Kiefer and Tyler Heath 7-5, 6-3; and Josh Poole and Turner Ennis downed Stephen Davis and Austin Aucoin 6-0, 6-3. West also swept girls doubles, as Andrea Mabry and Jody McKiffin beat Sydney Matthews and Alexis Gallistel 6-0, 6-0; and Lydia Cook and Shelby Hitt beat Laura Kiefer and Lisa Johnson 6-1, 6-0. In mixed doubles, the Knights got a win by forfeit.

The Cougars didn’t drop a girls match in defeating Meridian on Tuesday.
Leading the way in singles was Shannon St. Clair, who downed Mary Frances Moranto 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Cassie Munn and Claire Tadlock downed Caroline Compton and Meme Huff 7-6 (5), 6-3; and Emily Lucy and Lauren Lurk defeated Elizabeth Case and Teme Ransome-Kuti 4-6, 6-2, 11-9.
Newton County also got wins at boys singles where Brandon St. Clair beat Franklin Cross 6-0, 6-0 and at No. 2 boys doubles where David Brand and Russ Thompson bested David Seifker and Nick Price 6-4, 7-5.
Meridian got wins from Christian Jackson and Miles Huff against Bryden Reed and Patrick Ross at No. 1 doubles (6-3, 4-6, 10-5) and mixed doubles where Andrew Dayton and Madison Gillette beat Blake Cochran and Kelsey Tadlock 6-0, 7-5.
Newton County (4-0) hosts the East Mississippi Invitational at Northeast Park on Saturday.

Lamar finishes third at St. Andrew’s Invitational
Behind second-place finishes from Easton Key and Allen Massingill, the Raiders placed third Tuesday at the St. Andrew’s Invitational at Reunion County Club in Madison.
Key and Massingill each shot 76 to pace Lamar’s 324 team score. Also scoring for the Raiders were Daniel Finan with a 79 and Austin Terry with a 93.

The Eagles blasted four home runs in downing Shelton State at Scaggs Field on Tuesday.
Corey Dickerson got MCC’s offense started with a leadoff blast. Alan Williams then delivered a solo home run in the second, pulling MCC within 4-2 after Shelton scored three in the first.
The Eagles took the lead in the third, scoring three as Ben Kingsley blasted a two-run home run, scoring Jonathan Pace, and then Michael LeGrange drove in Avi Ahlzadeh with a groundout.
MCC tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a Pace RBI single to plate Meridian product Kenny Roberts and a sacrifice fly from Kingsley to score Pace. Shelton, though, rallied to tie it in the fifth.
The Eagles, though, bounced right back to regain the lead as Ahlzadeh doubled and scored on a Graham Spencer single. West Lauderdale product Darren Farmer then finished MCC’s scoring in the sixth with a two-run home run with two outs. Kingsley, who had doubled, scored on the home run.
Chase Jordan, who struck out six and allowed just one earned run in 4 1-3 innings, grabbed the win after relieving Dalton Kulas.
MCC (14-10) hosts Beville Fayette today.
