Roundup – St. Andrew’s ends Clarkdale boys’ season

Kemper County boys fall to Starkville at the Newton Shootout.

For the second straight game, the Clarkdale boys soccer team trailed by two goals at halftime.

On Saturday, though, there would be no comeback from the Bulldogs as St. Andrew’s downed visiting Clarkdale 3-0 in the second round of the Class 1A/2A/3A playoffs.

After battling through a scoreless tie for most of the first half, St. Andrew’s scored 32 minutes in and then tacked on another goal in the final minute of the first half to grab the two-goal lead. After Clarkdale overcame the same deficit in Tuesday’s playoff opener against Franklin County, the loss of Micah Redmond to a broken ankle in the opening minutes of the second half was too much for the Bulldogs this time.

“We were still fired up and ready to go back out there and score three goals to win it,” Clarkdale coach Mark Taylor said about the Bulldogs’ demeanor at halftime. “It was a lot closer than the score indicated. It was pretty evenly played.”
