special to the star
With the coldest temperatures of the winter season this week, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) reminds motorists to stay alert, slow down, and stay in control — the three elements to safe winter driving.
Forecasters say residents should brace for subfreezing temperatures and the potential for nasty driving conditions in the coming days.
The National Weather Service says there’s a 90 percent chance of snow in north Mississippi tonight. Watch out for possible snow, sleet and freezing rain in central Mississippi late today and into Thursday and showers in the south with a smaller chance of snow.
MDOT offers the following safety tips for motorists:
• Drive according to current road and weather conditions.
• Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
• Avoid situations where you may have to brake suddenly.
• Have tires and tire pressure checked. Tire pressure decreases in colder weather.
• Check weather and travel conditions before heading out. Log on to our Web site at www.MSTraffic.com for real-time traffic information.
• Wear comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement while at the wheel. Keep warm clothing for getting out of your vehicle.
• Make sure you travel with at least half a tank of gas.
• Make sure you have sufficient windshield washer fluid in the reservoir.
It’s also a good idea to keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle. Having essential supplies can provide some comfort and safety for motorists and passengers. Recommended items are:
• Ice scraper
• Tow chain
• Booster cables
• Road flares
• Antifreeze
• Flashlight and batteries
• First aid kit
• Blanket
• Bottled water
The Mississippi Department of Transportation urges all motorists to drive carefully, especially in winter conditions and on icy bridges. Remembering to stay alert, slow down and stay in control will assure safe travel during winter weather.
