War Eagles back in South State title bout

When it comes to big football games, Wayne County is no stranger. That being said, it should come as no surprise that the War Eagles (10-3) find themselves one step away from another state championship game appearance.

However, getting there will not be easy as they take on a Moss Point team that is coming off a sound victory against Picayune — a team that defeated the War Eagles this year — in the Class 5A South State Championship Friday night in Waynesboro.

According to Wayne coach Marcus Boyles, the War Eagles have been practicing in the mornings this week and look to be as healthy as can be expected and as ready to play as they have been all season.

“We have some guys that are not going to be able to go this week but that’s something we’ve dealt with all year,” said Boyles. “We’ve had a good week of practice and the boys are very focused on Moss Point right now.”

Moss Point (11-2) poses a very dangerous offensive combination of quarterback Joe Kirkland and tailback Byron James. Kirkland has thrown for more than 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, while James has rushed for 1,176 yards and 14 scores.

“Their quarterback and running back are not very big but they are very quick and elusive,” said Boyles of the duo. “We’re gonna have to wrap them up at the first chance we get.”

The War Eagles will rely on a combination of quarterback Demarcus Henderson and both offensive and defensive lines according to Boyles. Henderson has thrown for 1,754 yards and 15 touchdowns as well as rushing for another seven scores on the year.

“Demarcus has to continue to play well,” added Boyles. “I think the game will be won on the offensive and defensive fronts. They have to step up and play big for us.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
