The Lamar girls basketball team survived a late rally by Wayne Academy on Tuesday night as it defeated the Jaguars 36-33 at home. The loss was the first on the season for Wayne.

Both teams started slow as each managed just eight first-quarter points. However, Lamar’s defense was able to provide a small cushion going into halftime as it held Wayne to just two points in the second period to lead 15-10.

The Raiders were able to gain some momentum in the third as they scored 13 to pull away with a 12-point lead heading into the final quarter at 28-16.

However, Wayne used a full-court press throughout the fourth to chip away at the Raider lead to draw within three points with 10 seconds left in the contest.

After a Lamar turnover the Jaguars called a timeout with 2.1 seconds left. The ensuing inbound pass was broken up by McKensie Cobb to seal the victory for Lamar.

Cobb led all scorers with 14 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Olivia Mabry also chipped in a nine-point effort.

Wayne was led by Katrina Lofton’s nine points, while Morgan Tynes added eight.

Lamar jumped out to an early 20-6 lead Monday night and never looked back as they defeated visiting Wayne Academy 57-19 Tuesday night.

The contest’s outcome was never in doubt as the Raider defense held the Jaguars to just 11 first-half points. Lamar had seven different players score on the night.

The Raiders were led by Allen Massingill who had a game-high 22 points. Jordan Andrews, Blane Morgan, Danial Finan and Brooks Holladay all scored nine in the victory.

Wayne was led by Collin Freeman, who had seven points for the Jags.
