CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (AP) — The Monitor-Herald, a weekly newspaper which began in Calhoun City in 1899, will cease publication Dec. 31.

Journal Inc. bought the weekly in 2005 from Boone Newspapers Inc. of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Journal Inc.’s holdings include other weeklies and the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo.

Jounrnal Inc. chairman Billy Crews announced the closing in Friday’s editions of the Tupelo newspaper.

The independently owned Calhoun County Journal in Bruce will become the only paper in the county.

Crews says weekly paid circulation at the Monitor-Herald has increased 42 percent to 811 since Journal Inc. bought the paper four years ago, but it has the smallest in circulation and revenues in the Journal Inc. group.
