Dan Trimmer of Water Mill Gardens in Enterprise, Fla. was guest speaker at the July 11, 2009, meeting of the Meridian Daylily Club.

Trimmer, who has grown daylilies for 25 years, became interested in the hobby as a relief from the stresses of his career in law enforcement. He said when he went to purchase orange daylilies, he didn’t realize there were so many different colors. He saw one that he particular liked and a friend, Jack Brussell, said, “I made that.”

Trimmer said he changes diploid into tetraploid, reds into purples and orange into yellows. At one time, he had about 6,000 daylilies. Last year, he had about 2,500.

Trimmer considers hybridizing easy and incredibly gratifying. He works with his wife, Jane. He said that growing daylilies in green houses is like going on vacation. Daylilies do not grow the same in greenhouses as they do outside. Distension is 80 percent of the show. Most of his keepers are edges with no eyes.
