The following information on the upcoming municipal election has been provided by the city of Meridian:
Republican voters in Ward 1 and democrat voters in Ward 4 will make their choices in contested races during the May 5 primary. Those who choose to vote republican in Ward 1 will choose among George M Thomas, Wally Hudnall and Jesse Paul Barnett, even though the party’s candidate for mayor will automatically be Cheri Barry, who has no opposition in the primary. In Ward 4, democrat voters will choose between Jesse Palmer, Sr. and John Nelson, Jr. and will choose a mayoral nominee from among Percy Bland, William Bond Compton, Jr., Joe Norwood and Cassandra Sloan.
The party candidates in Wards 2, 3 and 5 have no opposition. Democrat voters in those wards will also choose from among the four Democrat candidates for mayor.
Should a run-off be required in any of the races for council or mayor, voters will be allowed to vote only in the run-off of the party whose primary they voted in on May 5. Anyone who did not vote in either party primary on May 5 can vote in either party run-off on May 19.
