JCJC’s McMullen named NJCAA Division II Pitcher of the Week

ELLISVILLE — Jones County Junior College sophomore Tyler McMullen has been named the NJCAA Division II Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 18. McMullen, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound sophomore from Meridian, tossed a two-hit shutout in JCJC’s 3-0 victory at Pearl River Community College last Saturday. He struck out seven and walked none. He only faced 22 batters, one over the minimum. He also belted a solo home run to help his own cause.
McMullen, a Southeast Lauderdale High School graduate, owns a 6-2 record with a 2.63 ERA for head coach Christian Ostrander’s Bobcats. He has tossed five complete games, including three shutouts.
On March 7 vs. Kishwaukee Community College (Ill.) in the Hinds Tournament in Vicksburg, McMullen threw a no-hitter in a 10-0 JCJC victory. In 65 innings pitched, he has allowed 54 hits, just 17 walks and has posted 67 strikeouts.
McMullen was outstanding at the plate as well last week. He posted a .538 batting average with two home runs and three RBIs. He is second on the team with a .369 batting average. He leads the team with six home runs and is second with 31 RBIs. McMullen, who usually plays third base when he is not pitching, is also tied for second on the team with 10 doubles.
