An increase in tuition and fees at East Central Community College in Decatur was approved by the College’s Board of Trustees at its April 14 meeting.

Beginning July 1, in-state tuition for full-time students will increase from $700 to $800. Tuition for out-of-state students will remain the same at $1,050. The fee for part-time students will increase from $75 to $85 per semester hour.

ECCC President Dr. Phil A. Sutphin said the additional revenue is needed due to state budget cuts and the increasing costs associated with operating the two-year college.

“East Central has not adjusted tuition and fees charges in several years while inflation and state budget cuts have reduced our ability to cover the costs of providing educational opportunities for students,” said Dr. Sutphin. “As much as we have resisted increases in the past, we must now do something to continue our programs at the level that is expected of us. Even with our proposed increases, EC’s costs remain competitive with the other community and junior colleges in the State and are very competitive in comparison to the costs at public and private colleges and universities.”
