• Renee Knight, Kelsey Summerlin, Allen Williams, and Henry Pham have received the C.B. Bailey Scholarships at Meridian Community College. 

These $650 per-semester awards are funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by the board of directors of Home Federal Savings and Loan Association. The former loan association is now BankPlus. Bailey served as manager and president of Home Federal from its opening in 1955 until his retirement in 1992. 

Knight was the 2008 valedictorian of Russell Christian Academy. She is in the University Transfer Program. A Dean’s List scholar, she has recently been tapped for Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. Her future plans include a career in the medical field. 

Summerlin is a 2008 honors graduate of West Lauderdale High School. She is in the University Transfer Program. Summerlin was named to the Dean’s List fall semester and has received an invitation to become a member of Phi Theta Kappa.  Her goal is to complete the bachelor of science degree in nursing. 

Pham is a 2008 graduate of West Lauderdale High School. He is in the University Transfer Program studying business. Pham works part time in his family’s business.

Williams is a 2008 graduate of Clarkdale High School. A dual enrollment student, he began MCC last fall with two college core courses completed. Williams is taking courses in preparation for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. After completion of the ADN Program, he plans to attend anesthesia school. 

• Kara Loper Kabore and Ashley Mathis Morris have been selected to receive the Catherine Hovious Nursing Scholarships at Meridian Community College. 

These $1,400 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation by the Rush Hospital Alumnae Association. Hovious dedicated 50 years to the nursing profession through her work at Rush Hospital. She earned five medical certifications, served as OR supervisor, director of nursing, and was one of the very first nurse anesthetists. She is remembered for her great compassion for her patients while always striving to become a better nurse. 

Kabore is a 1996 graduate of Leake Academy. She is in the third semester of the Associate Degree Nursing Program. A Dean’s List scholar, Kabore is a member of the Mississippi Organization of Student Nursing and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. Her goal is to work in medical missions overseas through the Southern Baptist Convention.

  Morris is home schooled and earned her GED in 2006. She is in the third semester of the Associate Degree Nursing Program. A member of the Organization of Student Nurses, Ashley works part-time in the Labor and Delivery Department at Rush Hospital and has been on two mission trips. She enjoys working in the labor and delivery area, but is open to serving where she is needed.

• Wesley Burdette Alphin II has been selected to receive the Dixie Highway High School Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $400 award, designated for books, is funded through the MCC Foundation by the local alumni group. First priority is given to students who have a relative who attended Dixie Highway High School.

Alphin is a 2008 graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School. He is in the University Transfer Program studying education. Alphin’s career plan is to teach at the secondary level and possibly go into school administration. He is the great grandson of Nell Elizabeth Wright Shelby and the grandson of Shirley Shelby Hastings, both graduates of Dixie Highway High School. 

• Emily Lyn Thompson has been selected to receive the Harry and Vivian Boureau Family Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $850 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by Mrs. Boureau in 1994 to encourage students studying music. Mr. and Mrs. Boureau were the parents of Sara Scaggs. 

Thompson is a 2007 honors graduate of Northeast Lauderdale High School. A President’s List scholar, she is vice president of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. Thompson is a member of the MCC Chorus and Dimensions, the auditioned performance troupe on campus. She is pursuing a degree in music. 

• Hannah Christine Allen and Jonathan Ryan Perry have been selected to receive the A.C. Johnson Civitan Scholarships at Meridian Community College.  These $600 awards, designated for books, are funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by the Meridian Civitan Club. The First Ladies Civitan has also contributed to this fund.  Dr. Johnson had a distinguished career in education, serving at Meridian Junior College (Community College), the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Mississippi, and Clark College.  He was a member of the Meridian Civitan Club and served as governor of the Mississippi Civitan District. 

Allen is a 2007 graduate of Calvary Christian High School. A President’s List scholar, she is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. Allen is In the University Transfer Program studying accounting. Her plans are to work toward the master’s degree in accounting and begin a career in Meridian.

Perry is a 2008 graduate of the Meridian Christian Home School Educators. He is a freshman in the University Transfer Program studying pre-law. Perry is a youth ministry council leader at his church, a volunteer for LOVE’s Kitchen, Civitan Club volunteer, and a domestic mission trip leader. He is an avid golfer. 

• Kara Gray and James Dexter Koen have been selected to receive the Gerald Price Memorial Scholarships at Meridian Community College. 

These $300 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation. The medical lab at Riley Hospital initiated this scholarship to honor their former associate. The family of Mr. Price continues to support this fund.

Gray is a 2005 high honors graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School. She is scheduled to complete the Medical Laboratory Technology Program in August 2009. A Dean’s List scholar, Gray is a member of Health Occupation Students of America. She will enter the workforce after graduation with the goal of pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the future.

Koen is a 2004 graduate of Millry High School in Alabama. He is a sophomore in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program. Koen is a member of the Health Occupation Students of America and the Medical Lab Technology Club. He plans to work in a local hospital and continue his career track toward certification as a medical technician.
