Miss. outlaws cameras that catch red-light runners

JACKSON (AP) — A new Mississippi law bans cities and counties from using automatic cameras to snap pictures of vehicles running red lights.

Cities that already have the traffic cameras will have to remove them by Oct. 1.

Gov. Haley Barbour’s spokesman, Dan Turner, said Monday that Barbour signed the traffic-camera ban into law late Friday.

Jackson and Columbus already use the cameras. Tupelo, Natchez, Southaven and McComb had been considering them.

Turner says Barbour decided to sign the bill into law after being assured by the Mississippi Highway Patrol that law-enforcement officers would still be able to use dashboard cameras to catch speeders.
