ENTERPRISE — Down to their last two outs and trailing by three runs, the Southeast Lauderdale Lady Tigers strung together five consecutive successful at-bats to overtake host Enterprise 8-7 here Friday night.
After the Lady Bulldogs (4-1) recorded the first out in the top of the seventh, Denisha Knight hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield. J.J. Frazier followed up with an infield single that moved Knight to second.
A walk to Brittany Pounders loaded the bases for Lainie Simcox, who had failed to get on base in her previous three at-bats. The senior slugger knocked Hayleigh Harper’s offering deep to left, clearing the bases and tying the game at seven. Harper took the loss for Enterprise and fell to 4-1 on the year.
A single to right-center field by Cortney Harper plated Simcox and gave Southeast (5-1) the lead for good.
“We knew coming into the seventh inning that we had our 9-1-2 batters coming up,” said SEL coach Mack Fanning. “We felt like Brittany and Lainie would get another at-bat, and they came through.
“This was a great team victory for us. Our team came a long way tonight.”
Once the lead was back in the hands of the Lady Tigers, Shelby Sheppard (3-0) shut down any hopes of an Enterprise comeback by getting three straight ground ball outs in the bottom of the frame.
Sheppard almost didn’t make it to the final inning after a hard hit ball off the bat of Summer Robinson grazed the pitcher’s head, knocking her to the ground in the sixth inning. The hit scored one run. After a few moments on the ground, the sophomore got up, took a few practice pitches to prove she was OK and got out of the inning two pitches later.
“Shelby took a ball off the head and just wouldn’t be denied,” Fanning said. “She pitched a great game.”
The Lady Bulldogs got on the board first, plating one run in the bottom of the first inning.
Haley Brooke Smith struck out, but reached on a passed ball to start the inning. She advanced to second on a fielder’s choice by Robinson and scored when Jessalyn Rozzell’s ground ball was misplayed.
Enterprise added one more run in the third as Bethany Volking lifted a fly ball into the outfield. Knight recorded the out, but threw behind the runner at third and Morgan Parker scored to make it 2-0.
Southeast got one back in the fourth when Pounders hit a leadoff, inside-the-park home run to right field.
The Lady Bulldogs made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the inning on a run by Haylee Roberts, who originally reached base on an error.
SEL took its first lead in the fifth when Pounders hit another ball into the right field corner. Her second inside-the-park home run scored Knight and Frazier, each of whom had singled.
Enterprise stretched its lead out to three with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action Monday by hosting Tayorsville, while Southeast travels to West Lauderdale today.
