It is hard to believe that it is already February. The pretty days have me wanting to get out in my yard and start to trim those shrubs that need it so badly. If you like to work outdoors you might consider joining the Extension Service for some of the programs we have coming to our office.
The Mississippi State University Extension Service will be offering a statewide Master Gardener training class beginning on Feb. 24. The training sessions will meet from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday for 5 1/2 weeks and will be held at the Lauderdale County Extension Service office.
University experts from around the state will be conducting the training via interactive video. Training begins with instruction in botany and soils. Other training sessions include plant propagation, plant diseases, fruits and nuts, entomology, turf grass, and vegetables.
To sign up for the class, please call our office to get an application form. In order to get class materials ordered, please sign up by Friday. There is an $85 fee that covers training materials, refreshments, and a one-year membership in the Mississippi Master Gardener Association.
After training a student must contribute 40 hours of volunteer work within the year before being given the title “Master Gardener.”
Become a part of the local Master Gardener group that is making a difference in the community. Sign up today so you will not miss this great gardening education opportunity.
Farmers’ Market Meeting
It’s that time of the year to start thinking about the local Meridian Area Truck Farmers Market.
A grower’s association meeting will be held Monday at the Lauderdale County Extension Office at 6 p.m.
Participating in this farmers’ market is a great opportunity for everyone. A lot of the producers work full time off the farm, so the farmers’ markets give them another opportunity to sell their produce. Plus, consumers enjoy fresh produce while stimulating the local economy.
If you would like more information on either of these meetings please call the Extension office at (601) 482-9764. You will need to pre-register for these meetings.
