Prep Roundup (Jan. 20) — Southeast rallies past Choctaw

Using a third-quarter surge Tuesday night, Southeast Lauderdale’s boys basketball team roared past host Choctaw Central for a 62-51 win.
After Choctaw Central rallied from a 13-10 deficit to grab a 31-21 lead at halftime, Southeast outscored their hosts 20-6 in the third quarter to reclaim the lead.
The Tigers then pulled away with a 21-14 advantage in the fourth behind 24 points from Harold Clark and 13 points from Ed Ruffin.
The Tigers host Raleigh on Friday.

Choctaw Central 75
After a slow first quarter Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers outraced Choctaw Central in a shootout.
Busting open a 12-12 tie after the first quarter, Southeast grabbed a 35-27 halftime lead before scoring 50 points in the second half.
Brittany Roberts led the Lady Tigers (19-2, 7-0 in division) with 32 points and seven assists, while April Durden (26 points and 16 rebounds) and Pashen Thompson (23 points and 18 rebounds) each notched double-doubles. Thompson also blocked three shots for Southeast, which hosts Raleigh on Friday.
Twanie Smith led four Lady Warriors in double figures with 18, while sister Skye Smith tallied 14 points.

Forest 47
The Lady Tigers shook off a tough second quarter and put the defensive clamps on visiting Forest in the second half of their Division 5-2A matchup Friday.
Newton was outscored 23-12 in the second quarter and was down 32-27 at halftime. But the Lady Tigers outscored Forest 13-8 in the third quarter and 13-7 in the fourth.
Shakara Edwards led NHS with 14 points, while Tawanna Patrick scored 12 and Ashley Hardy 10. The Lady Tigers go to Union Friday.
Lawaneca Pinkston led the Lady Bearcats with 16 points.

Forest 60
The Tigers took control with a big third quarter and held off the Bearcats in a battle of 5-2A giants.
Newton led 29-27 at halftime and 44-37 going into the fourth period.
The defending Class 2A state champs got 16 points from Keondre Hodges, 15 from Rashod Robinson and 12 from Dominique Williams.
Lavadius Lyles led Forest with 19 points, while Josh Pinkston scored 15.
Newton goes to Union Friday in another division battle.

Choctaw Co. (Ala.) 14
The Lady War Eagles limited host Choctaw County to single digits in every quarter Tuesday as they won in a rout.
Wayne County led 21-2 after the first quarter and 35-9 at halftime behind 12 points from DeKeshia Jones.
The Lady War Eagles visit Quitman on Friday.

The Wildcats were edged by visiting Brandon on Tuesday despite two goals from Jake Watkins.
Dallas Hannah added Meridian’s other goal on a header, while assisting on one of Watkins’ goals.
The Wildcats (10-2) head to Hattiesburg on Thursday.

Choctaw Central 0
The Lady Tigers got four goals from Camilla Sorensen in an easy win over visiting Choctaw Central Tuesday.
Sorensen scored a pair of goals and Southeast also got scores from Chelsea Abston, Kennedy McReynolds and Lainie Simcox in the first half as the Lady Tigers raced to a 5-0 lead.
In the second half, Sorensen and Lucia Mendoca scored twice each for SEL, which improved to 9-4 on the season.
Paige Sheppard recorded the shutout in goal.
Southeast hosts Clarkdale Thursday.

The Tigers scored four unanswered goals to knock off the visiting Warriors.
Southeast, which hosts Clarkdale Thursday night, is now 5-7-1 on the season.
The Tigers got an early goal from Brian Taylor before Choctaw Central knotted things up, then Jens Mannanal scored to give Southeast a 2-1 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Daniel Shin scored a pair of goals for the Tigers — sandwiched around another goal from Taylor.
Joel James was in goal for Southeast.

Northeast boys 8
Kosciusko 0
The Trojans got four goals from Kip Courtney on Tuesday as they hammered visiting Kosciusko.
Courtney scored one of his goals in the first half as Northeast (6-7-1) led 2-0 at the break. James Cranmore scored the Trojan’s other goal in the first half off an assist from Spence Bacum.
As Northeast pulled away in the second half, Courtney scored three more goals and Cranmore assisted on three goals. Also scoring for Northeast were Bacum, Wright Hobgood and Jordan Martin.
The Trojans end the regular season Friday at Caledonia.

Caledonia girls 0
Erika Joyner recorded eight saves in goal to preserve a shutout for West Lauderdale as the Lady Knights clinched a playoff spot Tuesday night.
Hannah Scott scored the game’s only goal off an assist from Kayte Ford with 7 minutes remaining in the first half.
West Lauderdale, which improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in division play, will close out its regular season slate with a road game at Neshoba Central Friday night.

Clarkdale bounced back from a Friday defeat to Philadelphia with a four-goal victory on Monday.
Sarah Beckman scored four of the Lady Bulldogs’ goals, while Sydney Dawkins scored the other.
Kayla Phillips and Courtney Castleberry each recorded one assist, wile Amber Spann had two saves in goal for CHS.

The Bulldogs also handed the visiting Tornadoes a loss by the same margin.
Each of Clarkdale’s five goals was scored by a different player, with five Bulldogs also tallying assists.
The goals were scored by Myles Malone, Micah Redmond, Chris Heyman, Mason Tabb and David Dennis.
Robert Aycock, Tabb, Hunter Morgan, Redmond and Anthony Fortin each had an assist.
Matt Taylor recorded three saves in goal for the Bulldogs.

The Leake Academy Rebelettes had no problems over the weekend continuing their dominating season.
On Friday, LA had five girls in double figures as the Rebelettes were able to counter a 25-point performance by Tri-County’s Kristin Purvis.
Courtenay Slay paced Leake with 18 points, while Shelby Howard followed with a dozen. Kelsey Harvey and Hannah Peoples each added 11, while Shelbi Horn had 11.
The score after the first quarter was 23-5 in favor of Leake.

Starkville Academy 41
The Rebelettes’ 26th win of the season wasn’t wrapped up as quickly as their previous game.
Leake trailed 27-24 at halftime, before outscoring the visitors 36-14 over the final 16 minutes.
Jenny Wilbanks and Emily Kea each recorded a double-double against the Lady Yellowjackets.
Wilbanks scored 27 and snared 15 rebounds, while Kea totaled 13 points and 18 boards. Hannah Peoples tacked on 13 points for the Rebelettes.
Leake has only lost two games this season.
