Murder suspects caught by BOLO

For those old enough to remember the old police TV programs such as Dragnet, Adam-12 and Hawaii Five-O an APB, all point’s bulletin, was a common phrase whenever law enforcement agencies were looking for suspects.

In today’s law enforcement lingo the acronym BOLO is widely used. BOLO simply means to officers in the field to, “Be on the lookout” for a specific suspect or vehicle. Friday it was a BOLO issued by officials of the Tuscaloosa, Ala. Police Department that directly led to two capital murder suspects being apprehended by Meridian Police Department officers.

MPD officials say the two men wanted for capital murder, 21 year-old Quinton Burrell Bush and Keandre Derrod Houston, 20, both of Tuscaloosa, were taken into custody after MPD units spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one issued in the BOLO. Bush and Houston were said to be traveling to New Orleans.

“We received the BOLO Friday afternoon and some of our units stationed themselves on the interstate,” said Lt. James Sharpe, interim commander of the MPD’s Investigative Division. “A vehicle matching the description in the bulletin was pulled over by officers and the two individuals were arrested.”

BOLOs can be issued locally, regionally or nationally thereby alerting all law enforcement agencies in the affected area.

A shooting in Tuscaloosa earlier Friday killed 21-year old Gabriel Spencer. Spencer’s roommate, Kevin McKinney, 29, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was listed in fair condition at DCH Regional Medical Center.

Bush and Houston are being held in Meridian, awaiting extradition to the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
