Prep Roundup — Southeast boys garner first win

Southeast Lauderdale’s boys outscored homestanding Raleigh in each of the final three periods of play to post a 52-51 win against the host Lions in area high school basketball action Tuesday night.

It was the first victory of the year for the Tigers, who improved to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in Division 5-3A action.

Southeast trailed by eight points after one period and was still down 31-24 at halftime. But the Tigers outscored Raleigh 16-12 in the third quarter and 12-8 in the fourth.

“We finally got one,” SEL coach Johnny Patrick said.

Ladarius Clark led the balanced scoring attack for Southeast with 12 points, while Harold Clark scored 10. Javon Atterberry chipped in eight and Patrick Page six.

Donte Moncrief had 13 points to lead Raleigh.

Southeast hosts Newton County Thursday.

The Lady Tigers got double-doubles from three different players and coasted to an easy win.

The victory improved the defending Class 3A state champion Lady Tigers to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in Division 5-3A.

Southeast started the game with a 20-6 run and led 39-17 at halftime.

Pashen Thompson had 21 points and 22 rebounds and Brittany Roberts scored 19 points and handed out 13 assists to lead SEL. April Durden also had a double-double with 16 points and 19 boards, while Keyosha Robinson tallied 12 points.

Danyell Little scored 16 points to lead Raleigh.

Southeast is in action again Thursday, hosting Newton County in another division game.

Northeast girls 40

The Lady Trojans picked up a Division 5-4A win on the road, nipping the Lady Mustangs in a defensive struggle.

Northeast was up by four after the first quarter, but managed just three points in the second quarter and trailed 18-13 at halftime.

The Lady Trojans were still down 30-22 after three quarters before putting up an 18-7 advantage in the fourth.

Norianna Haynes poured in a game-high 25 points to lead Northeast, while Sammone Lewis chipped in six.

Laquita Kemp led West Jones with 13 points.

Northeast, which improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in division play, hosts South Jones Friday.

The host Mustangs outscored Northeast 18-16 in the third quarter and 16-13 in the fourth to squeeze out a win.

The Trojans, 2-8 and 0-3, led 33-32 at halftime.

Northeast lost despite 22 points from Nathan Wheeler and 11 from Johnny Jones. Namon Cooley was also in double figures with 10 points, while Jamond Hill chipped in eight.

West Jones was led by Rodrick McCullum’s game-high 20 points.

The Trojans are at home Friday, hosting South Jones in another division tilt.

Wayne County 47

Quitman girls 43




The Lady War Eagles used a big third quarter to turn the tide and knock off homestanding Quitman in Division 5-4A action.

The host Lady Panthers opened the game on a 12-4 run and led 22-14 at halftime. But Wayne County outscored Quitman 16-4 in the third quarter to take a four-point advantage.

Tierro Frost and Lauren Douglas had nine points apiece for Wayne County, which hosts West Jones Friday.

Quitman, which fell to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in division play, got 10 points from Porsche Jones. Alesha Bonner chipped in nine points and A’Teyuna Doby scored eight.

The Lady Panthers entertain West Lauderdale in a makeup game Thursday.

Wayne County 65

Quitman boys 62




Trailing by one in the waning moments of the game, Quitman got a steal and had a chance to win, but the shot was off the mark and Wayne County escaped with a win after hitting two free throws.

Kegan Houston pumped in a game-high 28 points for the Panthers, who fell to 5-3 and 2-1 in Division 5-4A. Phylandus Powe added 15 in the loss.

Wayne County’s Jermaal Taylor scored 25 to pace the War Eagles, while Rico Rankins and Mark Slater had 12 and 11, respectively.

Quitman will host West Lauderdale on Thursday.

The Tigerettes got a game-high 21 points from sophomore sensation Jeraldone Campbell and weren’t challenged in their Division 4-4A opener Monday night.

Campbell also had 14 rebounds, five assists and six steals for the Tigerettes, who led 20-4 after one quarter and 37-10 at halftime.

Noxubee also got nine points apiece from Shanteria Tate and Keyetta Buckhalter. Jade Stewart chipped in seven points and Aja Forte scored six.

West Lauderdale was led by Nandi Franklin, who scored six points.

Noxubee, which improved to 3-2, was back in action Tuesday while West Lauderdale goes to Quitman Thursday in a makeup game.

The Tigers placed four players in double figures and got a game-high 18 points from Mississippi State signee Shaunessy Smith as they improved to 3-4 on the season.

Noxubee also got 17 points from Vincent Sanders in his first action of the year since joining the squad from the Class 4A state championship football team — while Kendrick Hollings scored 16 points and Daquarius Mallard had 12.

West Lauderdale lost despite 16 points apiece from Justin Ford and Arboneze Johnson. Craig McDonald was in double figures with 13 points and Matt Betts chipped in eight.

The Knights go to Quitman Thursday, while Noxubee was in action again Tuesday.

Central Academy boys 46




The Vikings fell to 8-4 on the season with a Monday night loss to Tupelo Christian Prep School.

Hamza Al Sabahi led Central Academy with 16 points, while Christopher Newman scored 10. Rowdy Rigdon and Ferris McGuire chipped in nine points apiece.

The Vikings were also expecting to pick up a forfeit victory from Faith Christian Tuesday night.

The Lady Vikings dropped to 4-5 on the year with a nine-point loss to TCPS Monday.

Central fell despite 13 points apiece from the sister tandem of Corey Dawkins and Alex Dawkins. Kendall Taylor chipped in nine points and Lillian Brooke Lindsey scored seven.

The Lady Vikes are not scheduled to return to action until Jan. 2, when they travel to Calhoun Academy.
