The “Restroom Robber” has been caught!
A man suspected of several recent petty larcenies throughout Meridian was apprehended by Meridian Police Department patrolmen Wednesday morning after a foot chase through downtown.
What made the foot chase so unusual was that several employees of The Meridian Star — including Publisher Crystal Dupré and another employee who was the alleged victim — were the ones pursuing the suspect over the course of several blocks.
“The suspect, Edmond Mosley, was taken into custody by patrol officers minutes after the chase began,” said Lt. Wade Johnson, MPD shift commander. “Mosley was found behind a building near the intersection of Ninth Street and Twenty-fifth Avenue.”
Mosley has been charged with petty larceny but more importantly, he is suspected of committing the same type of crime in other parts of the city.
“We’ve had several complaints of a man fitting Mosley’s description doing the same things in northern Meridian,” said one
official. “He always enters a business asking to use the restroom but ends up getting away with someone’s wallet.”
Mosley, 24, reportedly asked to use the bathroom inside the local newspaper but while inside, allegedly took a wallet from an employee’s purse. As Mosley left the building, the employee noticed her wallet was gone and she, Dupré and other employees spotted Mosley across 22nd Avenue near First State Bank. Mosley, once he was confronted by the employees, began fleeing on foot.
Dupré and the other employee chased after the suspect on foot, using the help of other pedestrians and motorists to track him as they phoned 911 for help.
A good samaritan was able to recover the victim’s wallet Mosley reportedly threw at one of the pedestrians who was assisting in the chase. Meanwhile, other witnesses led patrolmen to a location on 25th Avenue where they believed Mosley was hiding.
Wednesday’s victim said there was only eight dollars in cash in her wallet at the time of the theft.
