On Monday morning, students at Northeast Elementary will be learning the art of blacksmithing and broom-making by visiting artists Bennie and Linda Crevitt of Meridian, both exhibiting members of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi.

Classes will be taught on April 7 and April 8 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Benny and Linda Crevitt will be working with the Art Buddy program to teach students to make copper leaves using blacksmith tools, and how to make small hand brooms.

The “Art Buddy” program is designed for the fourth grade artistically gifted students to interact and engage in the district’s two countywide self-contained special education classrooms and help teach art lessons. The students participating in the program establish relationships and build community, as well as gain social skills and experiences that will remain with them for a lifetime. There are currently 16 artistically gifted students and 23 special education students participating in this annual program.

“We are so excited about having master craftsmen on campus to engage students in the making of fine crafts,” said Winki Allen, artistically gifted teacher at Northeast Elementary. “We are also grateful to VSAarts of MS for funding this project and enabling us to provide this experience in our Art Buddy program.”
