HATTIESBURG (AP) — A Mississippi man has been sentenced to four years in jail and must pay a share of more than $878,000 in restitution to the Motion Picture Association of America for his role in an international DVD pirating scheme.
Thomas Irving Davis Jr. pleaded guilty last year in a conspiracy that included copyright infringement, trafficking in goods and using copyright marks on and in connection with the goods, and fraudulently and knowingly importing unauthorized reproductions of U.S. copyrighted material.
A news release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says Davis will pay restitution jointly with co-conspirator Randolph Hobson Guthrie III.
Davis was sentenced Friday and faces three years of supervised release after completing his sentence.
Authorities say the investigation involved the first joint U.S.-Chinese undercover investigation. It started with the purchase of bogus discs at a flea market in Harrison County in 2003.
