BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The best works of art created by students in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Art and Art History will be displayed Nov. 16-Dec. 7 in the 32nd Annual UAB Juried Student Exhibition at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. South.

An opening reception is planned from 5 p.m.-7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16, at the gallery. Admission is free. Call (205) 934-0815 for information. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays. The gallery will close for Thanksgiving Nov. 21-24.

This year’s juried student exhibition was selected by Tom Eccles, executive director of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, and the director of the Hessel Museum.

Of the more than 200 pieces submitted, Eccles selected approximately 50 works. Four award of distinction winners were selected with prizes provided by Forstall Art Supplies. The awards will be announced at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov.16.

“It’s amazing to think that all of these works have been made by students in an undergraduate program,” Eccles said. “There really are some exceptional pieces.”

“There seem to have been some emerging themes,” Eccles said, “so in many instances I have not only made a selection, but I’ve suggested some relationships that the works seem to make among themselves.”

Eccles, the former director of the Public Art Fund in New York, visited UAB as the Edward M. and Hermione C. Friend Lecturer.
