A 30-minute car chase between Meridian police units and a man suspected of selling stolen copper at a Meridian recycling business ended peacefully Friday morning.

Lewis Charles Mitchell, 46, of Meridian, was the primary suspect in several burglaries in which copper was being stolen. Detectives with the Meridian Police Department had asked employees at Queen City Recycling on C Street to be on the lookout for Mitchell.

“At about 8:30 a.m., Mitchell was spotted by employees at the business and they tipped us off,” said MPD Spokesman Sgt. J.C. Lewis. “When patrol units tried to make a stop he fled.”

The chase made its way out into the county on Hwy. 11/80 East where Mitchell was able to avoid stop strips laid out by deputies of the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department. A few minutes later, with MPD and LCSD units trailing close behind, Mitchell stopped and was taken into custody without further incident.

Mitchell is currently being held in the Lauderdale County Adult Detention Facility charged with felony fleeing and grand larceny.
