JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Quarterback Seth Adams will get the start again this week at No. 23 Auburn, but Mississippi coach Ed Orgeron said Monday he’ll be quick to pull the senior if Adams continues to struggle.
Adams has thrown 10 interceptions in his last three games, including four in a 44-8 loss to Arkansas last Saturday that grounded Ole Miss’ offense. Brent Schaeffer entered the game and threw a touchdown pass, but Orgeron believes the team’s best chance to win comes with Adams under center.
‘‘We’re looking at why the turnovers happened and we think they’re very correctible,’’ Orgeron said. ‘‘Seth’s going to continue to be our starting quarterback, but there’s going to be less room for error. And if he shows that he can’t do it, then we’re definitely going to put Brett in there.’’
Adams, a walk-on who beat Schaeffer for the starting job in the offseason, completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,198 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions in his first five games.
In the three games since, he’s completed 50 percent of his passes for 530 yards with 10 interceptions and four touchdowns.
The Arkansas game was the first time Adams did not throw a touchdown as a starter.
‘‘If I turn the ball over it puts my team in a bad situation,’’ Adams said. ‘‘Obviously, I’ve got to eliminate the turnovers.’’
Schaeffer relieved Adams against Arkansas and connected with Mike Wallace on a late 37-yard touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion. Schaeffer’s return to the field led to speculation there might be a change coming.
But the coaches felt the four interceptions were not Adams’ fault alone. Orgeron said Adams tried to force the ball into situations he didn’t need to, the receivers sometimes made the wrong turn on their routes and the offensive line’s protection problems all contributed to the turnovers.
‘‘I expect him to bounce back,’’ Orgeron said. ‘‘I have a lot of confidence in Seth and who he is and how he prepares.’’
