Mississippi Highway Patrol authorities said Monday afternoon the investigation of a two-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon that left one man dead and another seriously injured is ongoing.
Killed in the collision was James J. Hawkins, 23, of Meridian. His father, James Wendall Hawkins, also of Meridian, was seriously hurt and as of Monday afternoon was being treated for unspecified injuries at a local hospital.
The driver of the second vehicle, Anthony James, was also transported to a local hospital Sunday afternoon. However, his injuries were described by officials as non-life threatening.
“We are still looking into the cause of this incident and it may be several days before our accident reconstructionist has finished his report,” said Troop H Commander Capt. Billy Mays.
According to Mays, James, driving a 2006 Ford pickup truck east bound and the Hawkinses, traveling west in a Jeep vehicle, collided in the 10700 block of Hwy. 80 west of Meridian.
Mays said the preliminary report from the scene showed James was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision.
