Brandon Walker of West Point has been named the new assistant sports editor of The Meridian Star.

Executive Editor Fredie Carmichael said Walker, who recently joined The Star’s sports staff after serving as sports editor of the Daily News in Bogalusa, La., will “raise the level of our local sports coverage.”

“Brandon is an enthusiastic journalist who understands the importance of local sports in a community our size,” Carmichael said. “He is a good writer who brings a new level of story telling to our sports pages. We’re delighted to have him on our team.”

Before joining The Star, Walker served as the sports editor of the Daily Times Leader in West Point and worked as a reporter for the Starkville Daily News.

“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to be a part of a great sports staff in a wonderful area of the state,” Walker said.

Walker is a 1998 graduate of West Point High School. He attended East Mississippi Community College and graduated from Mississippi State University in 2002, earning a degree in Communications.

“Brandon has already made an immediate impact in our sports department,” sports editor Rocky Higginbotham said. “He has a tremendous work ethic and has a deep passion for sports.”

Walker is married to the former Amanda Dunaway of Booneville.
