This poem was written in a hand-made Mother’s Day card by Leland Walker Hughes about his mother, Eulah H. Hughes. The poem was written in 1938, when Leland was 11 years old. Leland is now 81 and resides in the family home in Meridian. The poem was submitted by Dolores Wood, the granddaughter of Eulah H. Hughes and the niece of Leland Walker Hughes, their family artist and poet.
Only one mother
Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky
Hundreds of shellfish on the shore together
Hundreds of birds that go singing by
Hundreds of bees in the sunny weather
Hundreds of dew drops to greet the dawn
Hundreds of lambs in the purple clouds
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn
but only one mother the wide world over.
