Trojans rally for key victory in 4-4A

Northeast Lauderdale scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a come-from-behind, 4-2 win over Kosciusko in a key Division 4-4A contest in area high school baseball action Tuesday night.

The win lifted Northeast to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in division play. The Trojans go to Meridian Friday.

Northeast had just five hits, but scored three times in the fifth to erase a 2-1 deficit. Timothy Maloney had an RBI single in the fifth, while Tyler Covington delivered the big blow with a two-run homer.

Michael McKenzie was the winning pitcher, scattering six hits and giving up just two earned runs in seven innings. He struck out five.

West Lauderdale 4

Louisville 3

The Knights had to score two runs in the top of the seventh to escape with a 4-3 win over Louisville in a key Division 4-4A game.

No. 1 ranked West Lauderdale improved to 17-1 on the season after rallying from a 3-1 deficit.

It was 3-2 going into the seventh, when Logan Theall raced home on an Austin Davis bunt to tie the game. Cody Freeman then delivered the game-winning squeeze to plate Darren Farmer.

Farmer was 3-for-4 to lead West, while Tyler Vick had a solo home run. Freeman and Theall each had one hit and one RBI.

Patrick Daugherty (5-0) was the winning pitcher, giving up just two hits and no earned runs. He struck out 14 in the complete-game effort.

Calvary Christian 10

Russell Christian 0

Stephen Hudson tossed a one-hit shutout and the Cougars downed the Warriors at Q.V. Sykes Park.

Calvary won its second straight game and is now 2-5 overall and 1-0 in MPSA District 6-A play. Russell fell to 2-1 in district play.

Hudson struck out 11 and allowed just one hit — a single by Austin Nolan — in five innings of work. Zach Adkins was the losing pitcher for RCA.

Jacob Mathis was 2-for-3 and Caleb Riddle had one hit and two RBIs to lead Calvary, which hosts Lamar Christian Friday at 5 p.m. Trey Chapman added one hit and one RBI and Justin Sylvester also had a hit for the Cougars.

Calvary will also host its second annual tournament Saturday, with Kemper Academy, University Christian and The Veritas School taking part.

Enterprise 8

Clarkdale 4

In a battle of Bulldogs at Clarkdale, Enterprise got a 12-strikeout performance on the mound and used a late rally to get a Division 7-2A win.

Clarkdale led 4-3 going into the seventh inning, where Enterprise scored five times on three hits to get the win.

Blake Hennington went all seven innings to get the win, striking out 12 and working around seven walks and five hits.

Colby Pritchett had a double and a two-run homer for Enterprise, while Kyle Hicks had a two-run homer, a single and three RBIs in all. Tyler Cooper also had a double and an RBI while Hennington and Stephen Taylor had singles.

Kyle Chancellor had a three-run homer and a single and Kenny Roberts also homered for Clarkdale. Ryan Burns and Davey Knight also had hits.

Burns was the losing pitcher despite striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings.

Choctaw Central 2

The Cougars bounced back from a Monday-night loss with a Division 5-3A win over the Warriors.

Newton County is now 12-5 overall and 7-0 in division play.

Drew Wilson (6-1) was the winning pitcher, striking out 13 and giving up just four hits and two earned runs.

Colby Bishop homered, had two singles and two RBIs, Brandon Williams had three singles and two RBIs, Tyler Davis had a single, double and an RBI and Brandon Thomas had two singles and an RBI.

Carthage 13

SE Lauderdale 3

The Tigers fell to 11-8 on the season as they were run-ruled in a Division 5-3A contest at Carthage.

Richie Long was the winning pitcher for Carthage, going six innings and striking out six. Josh Gwinn was the loser for Southeast, which was out-hit 10-4.

Southeast hosts Carthage in a rematch Thursday in a game postponed from last week.

Newton Co. Acad. 7

The Vikings took the first game of a District 5-A doubleheader in Macon, improving to 8-3 on the season.

Central got a home run, two singles and two RBIs from Colby Moore, a single, double and two RBIs from Justin Walker and a single, triple and an RBI from Jason Sellers.

Clint Brown added two singles for the Vikings, while Chris Sudduth had a double.

Walker (3-2) was the winning pitcher, giving up nine hits and striking out six in a complete-game effort.

Homestanding CA completed the sweep to run its record to 9-3 on the season.

Jason Sellers (3-0) was the winner, as he surrendered seven hits in five innings of work.

Cody Boykin homered and drove in three runs, Clint Brown had a double and three RBIs and Trevor Eaves singled, doubled and drove home one for the Vikings.

Reid Brown added a triple, Chris Sudduth had two singles and an RBI and Lee Battle had one hit and two RBIs for Central — which goes to Immanuel Christian Thursday.

Newton County 5

In a Monday-night contest, the Knights improved to 16-1 by pounding out 22 hits against the defending Class 3A state champion Cougars. Ten of the runs came in the top of the seventh.

Darren had four hits including a home run, Austin Davis had four hits — including a homer — and five RBIs and Cody Freeman had a homer, two other hits and three RBIs to lead the offensive onslaught.

Luke Walker also had four hits for West, while Logan Theall had a homer and three RBIs and Paxton Pace had three singles and two RBIs.

Drew Wilson had a three-run homer for Newton County, which led 2-1 after four innings. Jeremy May had a double and two RBIs, Brandon Williams had a double and Tyler Laird and Kyle Buckley both had two singles.

Ricky Gardner (4-0) went five innings to get the win, scattering eight hits and striking out three. Jose Acosta fanned seven in 5 1/3 innings and was the loser.

The Trojans lost a heartbreaker in a Division 4-4A showdown at New Hope Monday night.

It was an especially tough loss for Northeast’s Timothy Maloney, who shut down the host Trojans with a no-hitter. New Hope’s only run came in the fourth when Coby Pittman walked and was advanced to second.

With Pittman on the move to third, Maloney struck out a batter on a breaking ball in the dirt. Northeast catcher Jeremy Barnacastle blocked up the pitch and threw to first for the out, but Pittman came racing home just under the tag for the game’s only run.

Maloney finished with nine strikeouts and three walks. Drake Gregory got the win for New Hope, giving up two hits and striking out 13.

Justin Pritchett and Tyler Covington each had singles for Northeast.

PREP SOFTBALL

SE Lauderdale 16

Forest 0

The Lady Tigers coasted to an easy victory over the Lady Bearcats in a Division 5-3A tilt.

Taylor Bailey got the win on the mound, facing the minimum of nine batters through three innings. She struck out seven and gave up no hits.

Laci Maxwell, Paige Sheppard and Brittany Pounders all delivered two hits and three RBIs for Southeast, while Abby Havard had two hits and Shelby Sheppard two RBIs.

Southeast, which is now 10-4 on the season, hosts Carthage Thursday at 7 p.m.

West Lauderdale 3

The Lady Knights dropped a three-run decision to the Lady Pirates in a Division 4-4A matchup.

West, which is now 7-6, hosts Northeast Lauderdale Thursday at 6 p.m.

Brooke Lee was the losing pitcher against Pearl despite surrendering just one earned run in six innings of work. Katie Williamson got the win for the Lady Pirates.

Emily Pogue and Tori Taylor both had two singles for West.

The Lady Vikings split a pair with the visiting Lady Generals in area MPSA slow-pitch action.

In the opener, NCA won 9-6 behind a single and double from Anna Blaylock.

Central got a single and double from Jessica Stokes, two singles each from Lillian Lindsey and Adrianna Rodriguez, two doubles from Kendall Taylor and a double from Hannah Martin.

In the nightcap, the Lady Vikings rolled to a 17-0 win behind a triple, two doubles and a single from Alex Dawkins.

Central, which is now 3-2 on the season, also got a single, double and triple from Stokes. Lindsey and Corey Dawkins had two singles each, while Martin and Veronica Rodriguez had doubles.

Carly Thomas had a pair of singles for the Lady Generals.

JUCO SOFTBALL

East Central 8-1

Copiah-Lincoln 6-3

The Lady Warriors split a pair with Co-Lin, winning 8-6 in the opener but falling 3-1 in the nightcap.

East Central, which is now 9-13, is at Itawamba Friday for another doubleheader.

Clarkdale freshman Kimbo Seale got the win in the opener, going six innings and giving up six runs. Kady Chandler earned the save with a scoreless seventh.

Sondreia Hillie had a single, triple and two RBIs and Loren Kennedy had three singles and two RBIs to lead ECCC’s 11-hit attack.

Shenique Brass added a double and an RBI while Candace Griffin had two singles.

In the second game, ECCC was out-hit 7-4 and lost despite a solid effort on the mound from Chandler. The former Neshoba Central star went six innings and gave up just one earned run.

Brass had a triple and Amanda Schmidt had a double and an RBI for EC.

Newton County 2

The Wildcats edged the Cougars by winning all three doubles matches.

Meridian’s Kelly Sterling and Kyle Dew were 6-0, 6-0 winners in mixed doubles over Darius Walker and Cassie Munn.

In girls’ doubles, Lauren Purvis and Mary Heflin Alexander of MHS on 6-2, 6-1 over Claire and Kelsey Tadlock; while Meridian’s boys’ doubles team of B.B. Mitchell and Will Watts won 6-4, 6-0 over Jason Hancock and Aaron Scoggin.

Newton County’s Scooter Walker won 6-0, 6-2 over Matt Crane in boys’ singles, while Elise Gibbs of NCHS was a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 winner over Elizabeth Case of MHS.

The Knights got three easy victories and came away with a 4-1 win over New Hope.

Claire Massey won 6-0, 6-0 in girls’ singles over Sarah Nelson, while Elliot Clark of West also won 6-0, 6-0 in boys’ singles.

The girls’ doubles tandem of Jessie Fortson and Bliss Pigott were also 6-0, 6-0 winners, while the mixed doubles team of Matt Naylor and Ashley Massey won 7-6, 6-3 over Sam Andrews and Jennifer Newman.

West’s Jeff Jones and Daniel Cook fell 2-6, 0-6 in boys’ doubles.
