MHS lifters place third in region meet

Meridian High School placed third in the Region 2-5A Powerlifting Meet recently, which was held at Northwest Rankin in Flowood.

Madison Central was first with 70 total points, followed by Northwest Rankin with 49 and Meridian with 41. Brandon and Columbus were tied for a distant fourth with 17 points, with Starkville finishing sixth with nine points.

Meridian’s lifters are now preparing for the Class 5A North State Meet at Madison Central on March 9. State championships are March 29-31 at Madison, with the Class 5A boys set for March 31.

In the region meet, Jeremy Clayton finished first in the 123-pound weight class with a total of 825 lbs.

Jimmy Seals, Dee Martin and Jeff Lyons were each second in their respective weight divisions. Seals had a total of 490 lbs. in the 114-pound weight class; Martin totaled 785 lbs. in the 132-pound class; and Lyons totaled 1,140 lbs. in the 165-pound weight class.

Third-place finishers included Ladarius Bogan (785 lbs. in 132 class); Jared Woods (1,140 lbs. in 181 class); J.Q. Henry (1,095 lbs. in 198 class); Walter Taylor (1,255 lbs. in 308 class); and Alan Coleman (1,210 lbs. in super-heavyweight class).

Fourth-place finishers included Isaiah Lewis (1,135 lbs. in 275 class) and Erik Taylor (1,130 lbs. in 242 class), while Daniel Young totaled 1,025 lbs. in the 220-pound class.

Scott Central

wins 3-2A meet …

Defending Class 2A state champion Scott Central finished first in the Region 3-2A powerlifting meet, which was held at Newton High School.

The Rebels tallied 73 total points and were followed by Clarkdale (30 points), Newton (29 points), McLaurin (25), Pelahatchie (12) and Union (7).

Scott Central had first-place finishers in the 114-pound division (Hubert Patrick); the 123-pound division (Montrell Wash), the 132-pound division (Josh Dye); the 148-pound division (Greg McBeath); the 165-pound division (Kendrick McKee); the 181-pound division (Eric Wagner); the 198-pound division (Derrick Harris); and the 275-pound division (Donte Patrick).

Clarkdale’s Chris Skinner won the 220-pound division, Newton’s Daniel Locklear won the 308-pound division and Pelahatchie’s Pete Young was first in the 242-pound division.

Other finishers for Clarkdale included Ezonde Jonston, who was third in the 132 class; Tyler Todd, who was third in the 148 class; Eric Houston (fifth) and Korey Waller (seventh) in the 181 class; Justin McMillian, who was second in the 198 class; Matt Mayerhoff, who was third in the 220 class; Elliot Smith (fourth) and Aran Keith (fifth) in the 242 class; and Blake Dyer, who was second in the 275 class.

Newton’s other finishers included Danny McDonald (third) in the 123 class; David Irby (fourth) in the 132 class; Dominique Williams (second) in the 148 class; Lurenzo Jones (fifth) and Cedric Harris (seventh) in the 165 class; Kavon Moore (fourth) and Chris Tadlock (sixth) in the 181 class; Dexter Hillie (third) in the 198 class; Davon Boykin (third) in the 242 class; and Mitchell Hillie (third) in the 275 class.

Union’s finishers included Kykonee Russell (fourth) in the 165 class and Lorenzo Wells (second) in the 308 class.
