ECCC baseball team gets first two wins

First-year head coach Neil Holliman got his first two wins with the East Central Community College baseball team Tuesday, as the Warriors swept visiting Jones County Junior College 5-4 and 4-2 in a doubleheader in Decatur.

ECCC, which is now 2-4 on the season, scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie in the opener.

George Washington was the offensive hero with a 2-for-3 performance which included a home run, a triple, two runs and three RBIs for the Warriors.

Jarrod Lowery was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI for Jones.

Jesus Aleman (1-0) threw three innings in relief and got the win, giving up two hits and one run. Anthony Winborne was the loser for the Bobcats.

In the nightcap, Washington homered again and former Union standout Jacob Casey singled, walked twice and scored three times to lead the Warriors.

ECCC scored twice in the first and was up 4-0 before Jones scored twice in its final at-bat.

Daniel Carela (1-0) threw five scoreless innings to get the win, giving up three hits and overcoming five walks. Brian Jones fanned four in two innings to earn the save.

Tyler Seaman was the losing pitcher for Jones (1-3), which got a pair of singles from Lowery.

East Central hosts Northwest Mississippi Friday at 1 p.m.

Quitman girls 34

The Lady Panthers saw their season come to an end in the Division 5-4A Tournament at West Jones.

Quitman trailed by just two points after one quarter, but was down 30-13 at halftime.

Takendria Cooley led the Lady Panthers with eight points, while Consuela Tucker scored 14 points for Northeast Jones — which improved to 20-8 overall and moved into Thursday’s semifinals against Laurel.

Valerie Clayton and Gabby Martin chipped in 13 apiece for the Lady Tigers.

Quitman boys 45

In a roller-coaster affair in the Division 5-4A Tournament at West Jones, the Panthers lost when a third-quarter drought helped the Tigers get the come-from-behind win.

Quitman eased to a 14-9 lead after one quarter and was up 28-19 before Northeast Jones outscored the Panthers 19-5 in the third period.

Kegan Houston scored 15 points for the Panthers, while Jeremy Dear was close behind with 14.

Tim McCullum led Northeast Jones, 18-10, with 23 points. The Tigers take on Wayne County in Thursday’s semifinals.

Clarkdale boys 33

The defending Class 2A state runnerups outscored Clarkdale in all four quarters to win a battle of Bulldogs in the Division 7-2A Tournament at Mize.

Bay Springs will now face Jasper County rival Heidelberg in Thursday night’s semifinals at 8:30 p.m.

Clarkdale, which saw its season end, trailed by just three points after the first quarter but was down 27-14 at halftime and 51-27 going into the fourth period. No individual scoring was available by press time.

The Lady Raiders saw their season come to an end in the MPSA Class AAA, Division II Tournament at Hillcrest Christian.

Lamar stayed with Oak Hill, the North’s No. 1 seed, for the bulk of the first half. The Lady Raiders were down by just one at halftime and trailed 18-13 at halftime — but Oak Hill opened the second half with a 19-6 run.

The Lady Raiders finished with an 8-22 record. No individual scoring was available before press time.

In the semifinals of last week’s District 3-AA Tournament, the Rebelettes opened the game with a 33-5 run and coasted to an easy win.

No. 1 ranked Leake, 33-0, led 56-15 at halftime.

Hannah Lee scored 13 points to lead the Rebelettes, while Hailey Henderson tallied 12 and Anna Clare Winstead 10. Julie Wilbanks and Mary Lauren Wilson scored eight apiece while Leslie Morgan and Courtney Slay had seven each.

Slay and Julie Shepard each had seven rebounds; Wilson and Britni Harvey each had three assists; and Harvey also had a team-high three steals.

Simpson Academy 32

The Rebelettes again jumped to a commanding lead to capture the District 3-AA Tournament title and improve to 34-0 on the year.

Leake’s next action is Thursday in the MPSA Class AA North State Tournament at Kirk Academy in Grenada.

LA, which was up 49-12 at halftime in the district tourney finals, got 16 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals from Allison Phillips. Hannah Lee added 14 points and five steals, while Mary Lauren Wilson scored 12 points.

Leslie Morgan and Hailey Henderson had eight rebounds apiece, while Britni Harvey had six points, seven assists and five steals.

Wayne County boys 82

South Jones 47

The War Eagles easily advanced in the Division 5-4A Tournament at West Jones Monday night, beating the Braves to advance to Thursday’s semifinals.

Wayne County, which is now 18-9 on the year, will take on Northeast Jones Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

In Monday’s win, Wayne outscored South Jones in all four quarters. The War Eagles closed the first half on an 18-5 run for a 38-19 advantage at halftime.

Jherico Davis pumped in a game-high 28 points to lead Wayne County, while Todd McDonald scored 15 and Jamal Taylor added nine.

South Jones got 14 points from Henry Hayes.
