Meridian High School assistant basketball coach and Kate Griffin Junior High School teacher Latonya Michelle Davis has been charged with lustful touching of a child, according to the Meridian Police Department.

Davis, 29, of 200 North Hills St., Apt. 19-F, was arrested Wednesday and later released on $25,000 bond.

Lt. Dean Harper, MPD spokesman, said the victim was a female minor.

Meridian School Superintendent Sylvia Autry said this was Davis’ fifth year teaching math and coaching in the district. She said Davis was fired about two weeks ago following an internal investigation conducted by the Meridian school district.

“I can’t release how it all came about, but when certain evidence came to our attention, we terminated the teacher and now it is in the hands of the police department,” Autry said. “It was the result of an inappropriate relationship with a student.”

Autry said the school district will move on and look for a replacement for Davis. If Davis is found innocent, Autry said, she will have the opportunity to reapply for her job.

Davis graduated from Meridian High School in the mid-1990s, where she was a multi-sport standout.
