Chris Walls capped a “dream season” Saturday night as the Louisiana alligator farmer led 91 laps and won the Super Late Model feature race in the Fall Classic, held at the Whynot Speedway.
In qualifying on Friday night, Walls set a new track record with a 12:995 run. He led the first lap of the feature. Then Billy Moyer took the lead and held it for the next nine laps. Walls retook the lead on lap 11 and never trailed again in the 100-lap race.
“The track was awesome,” Walls, whose nickname is the “Intimigator”, said. “The guys who put on the race really had their work cut out for them (because of Friday’s rain). But they really got the track racy.”
Walls said his runs at Whynot earlier this year really helped.
“Being here a couple of times previously gave us some invaluable knowledge in how to drive the track,” Walls said. “Both in driving experience and setup.
“Some of the guys behind me race for a living nationwide. If you can get in front of them, it will be easier to keep them behind you than trying to catch up,” Walls said.
Clint Smith came in second, followed by Dennis Duncan, Scott Dedwylder and Jason Cliburn. Mike Boland of Cuba, Ala., was in fourth place until he was wrecked on the final lap of the race.
There were seven yellow flags. There were 51 cars timing in for the race on Friday which started on Friday and concluded Saturday afternoon. One of the pre-race favorite, Anthony Rushing, was injured Friday after his car turned over. He was unable to race Saturday.
In other divisions:
• Modified – Justin McCrea took the lead on the 13th lap and held on for a win in the Modified Division. Greg Hollingsworth led earlier in the race but held on for second place. Ben Stephens came in third followed by Billy Cullett and Andy Pippen.
• Crate Motor Late Models – Chris Jimmerson took the lead at the 18th lap and went on to win the Crate Motor Late Model Division. Kevin Walk led briefly and finished second, followed by Phillip Carlisle, Larry Murphy and Greg Harris. Brandon Keeton came in sixth.
• Mini Stock – Steve Underwood won the 4-cylinder race. Artis Bunyard came in second, followed by Steve Bryan, Robert Underwood and Jennifer Shelton.
• Pure Street – Jeffrey Walker led all the way and won the yellow-flag plagued Pure Street race. Craig Barham came in second.
This concludes the racing season at the Whynot Speedway. Promoter Rodney Wing said there will be two Monster Track competitions set for Nov. 10 and 11.
